    From https://www.al.com/alabamafootball/...b-eyabi-anoma-picks-transfer-destination.html

    ___________________

Anoma had been suspended by the university earlier in the summer and was then kicked out of school following another university level issue, according to sources.

“We have a law that protects players and students in what you can and can’t say,” Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said Saturday. “The guy was dismissed from school, and that’s really all I can say about it.”

Anoma would be the third recent former Alabama player to land with Dana Holgorsen.

T.J. Simmons and Vandarius Cowan both transferred to West Virginia when Holgorsen was the team’s head coach. Now, Anoma is set to join him at Houston.

More of a satirical indictment of Alabama and its checkered past with race relations.

Appreciate the benefit of the doubt, DM. In any case, obviously I don’t know his story at all so I’ll cool it with the cheap jokes. Coog staff has been working that transfer portal to impressive effect.

Is it possible West Virginia was holding Dana back, and Houston doesn't.
If that is true, I'm excited.

Dana has off the record said that WV is an incredibly difficult place to recruit. He said that it is at the bottom of the pecking order in the Big XII, that there are not a lot of local kids to choose from, and a lot of those kids do not want to stay home. He then had to fight of VT for the local recruits there are. So you are left recruiting second tier guys and when that happens, most those kids decide to stay home (which isn't West Virginia).

Also interesting is that there are some around the university that feel the move to the Big XII has actually hurt the competitiveness of the program.

    This.

Also the people at UH will not discuss what he did but I was assured he didn't do anything criminal or violent. They also point out that he was an early high school graduate and entrant at Alabama and there was a poor cultural match.

So I don't know, he may get in trouble at UH, but the people close to the situation do not seem to feel that way.

Also, unless Renu Khator has suddenly changed, there is no way that she would allow someone with a bad background to come to the program. She shot down several potential UH football coach hires over concerns that they could cripple the university football program for decades with a scandal.

I had heard much of that before. But thanks Nook for recapping it so well. Last paragraph was news. I have to think that Houston Dana still would have lost Anoma to Alabama - no shame in that. But still, Coogs coach is running with the big dogs. In spite of what was supposed to be a strength, we sure didn't see that with Appelwhite. Really, any of our coaches. Hermann recruited very well, but the only five star he got fell into his lap. Sumlin (maybe) turned Greenbury from ND at the last minute. But this transfer injects me with a hope and enthusiasm I did not have before. Bring on Oklahoma!, win, lose or draw.

In a recent speech, Holgorsen talks about Houston no longer being a stepping stone. Gives credit to Khator and cites the facalities, culture, overall growth of the school, and the city itself. I am a huge fan of what Khator has done. She has made my degree more valuable, as well as other accomplishments perhaps more important. IF UH is still a stepping stone, dear God please don't let her be the one to step up.

They put a waiver request in but I haven’t heard much from UH feeling confident.

Love the picture of Applewhite who is referred to in our house as Levine II. Nothing personal. When you start against OU in Norman, you better get all hands on deck.

He would of had a free run to the endzone with a better pass in stride but good to see Greg Ward Jr. out there

    Just killing time here....
Waiting for the start of the season and I find myself revisiting the Dana Holgorsen hiring. At the time it seemed pretty straightforward. Power five coach - WooHoo we are not a stepping stone! Hired a head coach, (not an assistant/coordinator) and a decent one at that. He has Houston ties and if things work out it could be a good long term fit for both sides. Coogs stepped up in weight class, paid the bill and got a proven commodity for their money.

Holgorsen is know for his offense so the choice of DC was especially important. I really liked David Gibbs when he was our DC and I understand he applied for our job. Disappointed we did not pick him up, but Tech's defense was not that great so maybe i don't know what I'm talking about. We looked at some guy from (I think) UCLA who is known as a turnaround specialist. We certainly need a turnaround, so I'm on board. Don't know if he was actually available or not (remember Lincoln Riley's name coming up a few years ago and with hindsight I'm pretty sure he was never available) but we didn't get UCLA guy. Instead Coogs plucked Joe Cauthen from Arkansas State! That seemed a step back after raiding the power five. But reading up says he creates an aggressive style that leads to turnovers and sacks. He is ours now and I am fully behind him.

Then the Rockets trade Chris Paul for Russel Westbrook. Obviously Tilman Fertitta's hands are all over all of these deals/hires. And that gets me thinking Tilman likes that Russel is flashy in a way that will put fannies in the seats. I can go to a game and watch Shane Battier stay between his man and the hoop all night long and think I saw great defense. My wife would be bored to death at that. But a ferocious Westbrook dunk is the kind of play she can understand and cheer for. Just look how Westbrook dresses, while Chris Paul...well Chris sells insurance!

So back to the Coogs. Maybe Tilman's main thrust is to get fannies in the seats, more so than winning. Holgorsen exciting offensive, Cauthen exciting defense. The casual fan knows when to stand a cheer and has a good customer experience. I always figure that winning fills the stands, but it didn't during the Hermann years. Honestly it was a crime that the Hermann era didn't have all sellouts, espeially the second year. Maybe this deficit spending is unsustainable and the Coogs just don't have the ability to slog thru the traditional weak attendance.

So trying to sum all that up...Go support the team.
I live in Austin (but a Coog season ticket holder), a friend of mine who is a longtime Longhorn season ticket holder went to Mack Brown's first meet and greet and excitedly told me "Mack said - wear orange, come early, be loud, stay late"! Maybe this hiring is our call to arms. Khator has done an unbelievable job for years. Tilman is spending the money now. It is the fans turn to step up. Support the progress UH has made over the last decade and go to games. Hope to see you there!

PS: if you are the one who donated the $50,000,000.00 - thank you.

No, I was not the one that donated the $50,000,000 but I share your enthusiasm regarding this upcoming season. I wish the Oklahoma game was later in the year. The reality is that it is not and that we are underdogs currently by 25 points on the road. So expectations for our team to begin the post Levine, I mean post Applegate era are not very high, not to me anyway.

I have been reading everything I can find about our team and if what is being put out there is credible, we have some decent talent coming back and some new recruits to get excited about. The practices have been much more intense than in the past few years. It will take time to turn a program around that Applegate pretty much drove into the ground. I do not expect us to win our first game against OKLA but I would like to see us go out there and compete with grit and effort. Win or lose, I think we will find out quite a bit about this team this coming Sunday in Norman, Okla.

Good post. I've been thinking though maybe part of the attendance problem is the time of day for most of these games. I've put off buying season tickets mainly because my wife has no desire to sit outside 2 to 3 hours for an afternoon game in September.

When we were playing in Robertson, game times weren't controlled by TV networks as much so we could have evening games and they moved much faster.
