I see people using statistics showing the exceptionally high crime rate in black communities (for which victims are overwhelmingly poor black people who live in those communities) as some sort of counter-argument against the seriousness of white nationalist domestic terrorism. These are two different issues. This thread is specifically about the threat of ideology-based terrorism. Black inner city crime is as relevant to this topic as bringing up suicide rates or the opioid crisis.

Honestly, come on dude. Most rap listeners are white. It's a bad argument. It's like claiming some link between Martin Scorsese movies and the mob.

The only time these people give a damn about Chicago and the crime rates in black communities is as a false equivalence. It's so predictable and boring.

This isn’t really relevant as I didn’t comment on race with regards to rap music.

It’s obnoxious but it’s not totally unrelated. The attempt is to illustrate That we don’t need gun laws because it’s really only blacks people killing black people.

Like sandy hook and all the other shootings are flukes and we shouldn’t base policy on flukes or stats that are inflated by the blacks.

    It’s ridiculous

Of course but I think that's the elephant in this argument about music and some connection to crime.

There are multiple studies that do show listening to rap music does increase feelings of aggressive and it is linked to violence. The same is not true of video games.

That however still doesn't justify comparing white nationalist propaganda to gangsta rap. One is artistic expression about life. Another is directly about inspiring a movement of hate toward particular groups of people. They aren't event the same ballpark or even the same sport. Heck one isn't even a sport.

Yep...and there are rappers like A$AP Rocky that write lyrics like "f the popo" that get special treatment from the President.

Pink Floyd's The Wall didn't make me go insane and become a fascist dictator. Yes life does imitate art often (think of how many movies from the 60's and 70's have basically become reality now), but there is very little connection to taking steps to become the characters in the art that they consume. Eminems character in the Marshall Mathers LP is a character. People who listened to it understood that, and weren't inspired to go murder their ex wives.

Only old (minded) super evangelical conservative people think like this which is who 45 and the right wing media (not to mention our Texas leadership who are becoming more and more embarrassing) were trying to talk to yesterday. Not you or I, but old super conservatives who buy this BS, and listen to people like Pat Robertson who think California has earthquakes because of Hollywood liberals.

I actually think its the opposite and music & film mostly is self reflective & introspective in a way that actually helps deter depression & anxiety. Yes, there are propaganda packaged music & film, but you know what...

Most of the time that "art" often comes off looking like this garbage dumpster fire-

Conservative Extremists have adopted this diversion tactic since Trump’s taken office. Any time something happens that threatens to change something they hold dear, they justify it by some bogus means that’s isually irrelevant to the topic at hand.

“We had a mass shooting but when was the last time we had a real agency checking the violence ratings on video games??”

Edit: When are we also going to learn to stop taking the bait and engaging with these nutty folk? We’re arguing about music? Gun defenders will literally blame everything else and somehow convince pro-gun legislation advocates to engage in a feces throwing match. It’s almost admirable.

These folks were raised wrong if music, politics, and video games are influencing their tendency to fire guns at people. What a time to be alive.

I doubt it's any more or less influencing than rock and roll or heavy metal or any other aggressive forms of music that people use on playlists to go to the gym.

I wonder if rap music is more likely to negatively affect black people more than non-blacks. That could partially explain why suburban white kids that consume rap music do so without picking up the same habits that black kids pick up. I would predict that the amount of influence would be greatest in blacks, followed by Hispanics, and then whites with the gap between whites and Hispanics less than the gap between Hispanics and blacks.

It's not about the drugs and jail time... it's also about violent assault. Sexual abuse. Constantly degrading women as part of a culture. it's about what he represents and it hurts African Americans by putting them in a trap of consumerism.

"We need $300 sneakers to be important". "We need to buy expensive stuff to prove ourselves" "We need to get these exclusive brands" etc. It crushes the self worth of anyone who doesn't have these things or strives for a middle class life, it also creates some animosity amongst youth towards adults who play it straight and are stable.

Barry agrees in private circles, but obviously in public he has to be one of the boys so as not to appear too "white" to a certain demo.

In general all these guys made millions glamorizing violence , hating on white men, bigging up the projects, but once they get rich, they flip the script and play to the white men while distancing themselves from the projects. I guess a charity concert once a year makes people look past it.
