They were crapped on for doing "the process." For the sport overall when a team does that it is just bad for the sport. It might be beneficial for the team it isn't beneficial for the league.
Everybody right... Buxton was top player in draft, and wanted full slot. Correa selected with knowledge that Astros could work slot angle and get LMC (before anybody else was even thinking about manipulating the slot system that way)... but they didn't select him solely to save money, they thought he would reach the majors faster (and he did). Correa was thought of as a special/marketable talent from the get-go.... and it only got more steam once he started having real minor league success.
Looking at Correa in terms of marketability, Feel like he should only be behind Harper and Kershaw at this point, and has the look to cross sport. But that hasn't really materialized. This seems like another dropped ball by mlb and or the Astros. Harden and Paul are so far beyond where he is currently it's almost scary, and they haven't won anything. But the guy has the look, talent, and ring. He should be a global force right now.
Weird that you didn't mention the most marketable player baseball has (Trout). Shows how disconnected you are with the concept that baseball is a local/regional sport... not a global one... despite having more international stars than the NBA/NFL combined.
Carlos has had one season where he’s played in more than 110 games (2016). He’s never had 100 RBIs, never more than 24 HRs and one season of hitting .300. I know these are flawed stats, but they are the ones the general public follows. It’s not the Astros or anyone else’s fault that Carlos isn’t a bigger name.
Trout doesn't even want to be marketed. He's on record. Where have you been? That makes him remarkably unmarketable. You seem to be the one disconnected with Trout and where baseball wants and needs to be. We just played in London.
Doesn’t change the fact that he’s the face of baseball. It will always be a local/regional sport until more countries’ professional leagues start gaining traction. Playing in London is relevant how? Yes, a lot of ex-pats live or work in the UK and will sell out two games featuring the two most popular baseball teams. Playing in strong baseball countries like Japan or Cuba would be more about the global popularity of the game... but MLB just did away with the Japan games, and the government won’t let the Cuba games happen again.
I love what Crane/Luhnow did playing the long game. They were proven correct on many different levels. The Texans org could learn a thing or two from the Astros org, if they weren't so hard headed and worried about perception.
Guys, Alvarez just broke a record that rookie Pujols set back in like 2001. Still on pace for a ridiculous 105 RBI on the major league team alone! And with Correa in front of him and this version of Gurriel behind him, It doesnt seen unfathomable for him to drive in 1 RBI per game. 34 HRs and 106 RBI (AAA and MLB combined) We’re still in July...
