There is a path for Westbrook to be pretty efficient. The answer may be him shooting MORE 3's.

Westbrook's best year from beyond the arc was 2016-17, and that year he took, by far, the most 3's per game he had in any season of his career. He shot 34.3% from 3 on 7.2 attempts per game. To put that in context, he averages 3.6 attempts per game for his career, and his second highest attempts per game was last year where he shot 5.6 per game.

Not only did he shoot a lot more 3's that year, but his shot distribution from behind the arc was the highest of his career as well. Meaning, of all the shots he took that season, 30% of those shots were from 3. For context, for his career, 19.6% of all of his field goals come from behind the arc. But to put that in context compared to his peers, Chris Paul took nearly half of his shots last year from behind the arc, with 49.3% of his field goals being from long distance. Harden's was even higher, with 53.9% of his shots coming from deep. So even though Westbrook had the highest percentage of his shots coming from 3 in 2016-17, it's still much less than Paul and Harden.

In 2016-17, he had a TS% of 55.4%. That is pretty respectable. It's the highest of his career. What's interesting though, is that he had the same exact TS% the previous year, yet he only shot 29.6% from 3. The reason is because that year, for whatever reason, he decreased his distribution of long 2's from his career average of nearly 20% of his shots to only 10% of his shots. And he traded in those long 2's for shots at the rim, which at 37.7% of his shots was (and still is) the highest of his career.

So one year he increased his distribution of 3's and had the highest efficiency of his career, and another year he increased his distribution of shots at the rim and tied the highest efficiency of his career. It's almost as if there is something to this whole Rockets philosophy of lay-ups and 3's and Daryl Morey knows what he's talking about. And if the Rockets can have him tweak his game just a little bit in those ways, (and he's done it before), he can look forward to having his most efficient seasons he's ever had, here in Houston.

    ^ lol Clutch.

Uhh, yeah. Best strategy: use your elite skill (athleticism) to drive and create havoc. Kick and let the wide open person take the shot.

You may be right. I may be crazy. But it just may be a lunatic you're looking for.

You have to realize Clutch has to balance his participation in threads due to the sheer amount of threads posted. So for him to use one of those "precious" posts for that Instant Classic response.

    Makes it THAT MORE AWESOME!!!!

Honestly Westbrook is a momentum influenced shooter. Seems like he gets hot at times then he goes on these cold spells where he looks really out of it. Russ and Harden they need to create a pace that resonates with everyone involved and makes everyone their best them lol.

If we're treating WB like a car you ride 200k miles with, start with shooting coaching and pray that he improves next season while his athleticism declines

Of course he'll have wide open looks from downtown, the likes of which he hasn't seen.. But, the real opportunities to my way of thinking, will be getting the ball in space with a step or two and taking it to the hoop for countless easy finishes/flushes off the wing.

So what you're suggesting is Westbrick shoot us OUT of games

Great idea but hey it's gonna be fun one way or the other

I don't want him shooting MOAR 3's. All I want him to do is push the pace and attack the basket plus play defense

I’m sure Harden and Westbrook will get some time in together before the season.

Westbrook’s shooting is a bit of an enigma - before falling off a cliff in the last two years, he was a consistent 80% FT shooter. His form looks fine, and I always thought his percentages were somewhat hindered by bad shot selection, as opposed to being an MCW like shooter. This was an interesting read on his free throws - https://basketballforever.com/2019/...ruined-russell-westbrooks-free-throw-shooting

The big question is just how he’ll figure out rhythm with another ball dominant player. Paul George is a great player, but he wasn’t a natural high usage guy. Even to some extent, Durant was a finisher - a freak of nature shot maker. Neither of those guys were playmakers. The Thunder thought Dennis Schroeder would allow Westbrook to play off the ball, but that’s a totally different world than Harden.

He’ll have a ton more open looks form 3 or mid range, combined with less attention when he has the opportunity to attack the paint (his biggest strength).

He’s also one of the best pro basketball players on Earth so working on his shot because we’re a team that shoots tonnes of threes, you’d assume, is a given.

Either way, he’s going to score at a higher rate, thus jamming it up the arse of every d******d expert who says this was a bad idea.

Let’s hope that it’s more of the short 3, because he sucked at the long 3’s.

    No.

He needs to limit his three point attempts to under 2.5 a game. Focus on getting to the free throw line and creating open shots for shooters.

    Westbrook 2018-19 shooting splits:

    At Rim: 63.8% (363/569)
    3 to <10 ft: 22.7% (32/141)
    10 to <16 ft: 32.4% (72/222)
    16 ft to <3-pt: 35.3% (73/207)
    3-pt: 29.2% (130/445)

    Total EFG%: 46.4%

    Woof

Just for fun, if Westbrook turned every shot attempt further than 3ft away from the basket into a 3-point attempt, his EFG% would 51%. Still below league average, but much better than a putrid 46.4%.

For his career, 34% of his shots have been from mid-range (10-22 feet). He’s shot 39% on those shots, or 0.78 per shot. If he simply turned all of those into 3s, those become 0.92 per shot...not great but you can live with it.

Westbrook needs to become his own version of Harden. Dunks/layups/3s/free throws, but based on his constant pressure and athleticism vs Harden’s prodding and deception.

On the Rockets, a Westbrook mid-range 2 is NEVER the best shot available...I hope he gets that.
