Wouldn't mind him filling in there occasionally, but he projects best as a 2B/backup SS or utility infielder due to his defensive abilities, IMO.

Probably wouldn't be my choice as a top 30 prospect, but it's cool he gets recognition.

Has power, but as a 1B/LF only guy, hard to have real value with all those strikeouts. If he could be even serviceable at 3B (played there one or two games), it'd give him at least a bump in value.

    I don't even remember.

With the game out of reach, Taylor Jones hit a three-run homer (17) in the 8th to make a Round Rock blowout loss look a little more respectable.

    Cristian Javier @ Midland: 3 IP, H, 6 K

Javier has allowed 21 hits in 50.2 innings with Corpus Christi this season. Will he throw 100 innings before allowing 50 hits this year?

Yohander Martinez and Reimy Beltre will represent the Astros at today's DSL All-Star Game. Jherson Pereira was originally named to the AL team, but since he's now in the US, Beltre is taking his spot.

Checking in at their halfway point, the 5 seventeen year olds who lead the DSL Astros in PA have all been pretty good. Martinez (wRC+ 166) and C/1B Miguel Palma (wRC+ 139) are the 2 to be most excited about. But IF Cristian Gonzalez (weaker stats but an extremely protectable athlete), OF Omar Diaz (wRC+ 109), and OF Andres Monzon (15 SB in 39 g) all have played well enough that they should be stateside next year.

Less to be excited about on the pitching side, although I think by now we’ve all seen enough to know to trust Luhnow and his crew to develop international pitchers. In addition to Pereira and Reina, 16 year old LHP Jose Nodal (6’3”, 195) has been impressive, with 11 k/9.

Why does Baseball Reference list Toro as a 3B and catcher? Does he catch at all? Are any of our AA or AAA players possible call ups in the near future? Seems like our bullpen is getting taxed hard but I don't know any of the possible arms we'd call up or try. I still like the Diaz for Thornton deal still, but he may have been a nice arm to have at this point.

Toro played some catcher the previous 2 seasons, but that was abandoned when they realized how good his bat was, and they decided to speed him up. For now he is a 3B who has spent some time at 2B, 1B, and C, which gives him additional value as a bench/utility option. He will be added to the 40 man this offseason and will likely be called up to fill in for injuries throughout next season, assuming he isn’t traded.

Other than Tucker and the guys who have already been called up, I don’t think any more position players will he called up this season. Beer, Rojas, Toro, McCormick, Ferguson, Wrenn, and Matijevic are potential callups next season. Same goes for the pitching; I don’t see any new callups this season. But quite a few guys have pitched well enough to position themselves as callups early next season: Javier, Bailey, Hartman, Bielak, Scheetz, LaRue, Abreu, Bukauskas, Paredes, McKee, Ivey, Donato, and Pinales.

Brayan de Paula, one of the two players that the Astros acquired from the Marlins for IFA pool money, allowed two hits, walked one, and struck out seven over four scoreless in the GCL today. He was facing his old organization.

Astros have a 23 year old catching prospect posting a 900+ ops in AA. (It’s Shaver, who has caught 2 games.)
