In an opt-in and trade (with a promise of an extension), Jimmy is giving up about $12-15m total (over 5 years) once you calculate the difference in taxes.

He's not just giving up $8m in one year like that.

Butler is no AD, but Lebron is no Harden.

Not just taxes, housing is a lot cheaper in Houston too.

I don't think he cares about things like that, if the housing is more expensive in Philly, then he will sell it more expensive too. Rich people don't worry about those things.

The total compensation loss is somewhere between $12-$15 million over 5 years if he opts in. Accounting for taxes precisely is impossible because income taxes are assessed based on the state where the game is played, not by where your employer is located.

And the Lakers FO is a lot more dysfunctional. But wait when they get back DLo Russell.

Is it beneficial for the team to leak an info that they plan to pursue Butler via trade?
I mean maybe it's better to work behind the scenes without everyone talking about them. Just my opinion

Looking at the CP3 acquisition, for example, we heard effectively nothing about it until it was clear he wanted to come to Hou and we believed we had the moves in place to get sufficiently below the cap to sign him outright.

I took that (away vs home games) into consideration when I calculated (posted a month or so ago).

I'm pretty sure it's $5-6m. Are you suggesting that it's double my figure or did you do a calculation too?

It is extremely beneficial in this particular scenario actually. Putting Philly under pressure early in the window makes their decision more difficult since they won't know exactly what they can secure with cap space if Butler walks.

Your calculation appears to be the total difference over the next FOUR years (not five, as you maybe mistakenly put it in your earlier post).

@justtxyank (I believe) is getting his $12-15m difference from a FIVE-year differential between Butler re-signing in Philly for the full five-year max and Butler opting-in then re-signing with HOU in 2020 for the full four-year max.

That makes sense. Thanks for the clarification to both of you!

About our trade exceptions...If the Rockets send cash or a 2nd pick for a player that fits the trade exception, how does that affect the books? Am I wrong to think the trade exception is a "free player"?

The only team I see working for a Kawhi/Butler pairing is the LA Clippers.

Yes, you are wrong. Any team salary added (whether via TPE or otherwise) will count against the hard cap.

Of course, since few of us personally know Harden and Butler, I can't say with certainty that these clowns are wrong; but given that Harden and Butler are buds and have angled for this for a while, I'm not too worried about chemistry.

Besides, Broussard speaks, and my skin starts to itch as if from a fungus.
