Hunter Brown, college pitcher (89 by MLB.com) is the pick in the 5th. Our first pitcher of the day. Right handed
Brown has a 92-96 fastball (up to 98) and holds it well. Sinker, slider, rudimentary changeup, potential starter profile. Division II All-American. Slider wavers between plus and below-average. 9-0, 2.21 ERA, 85.1 IP, 62 H (2 HR allowed), 23 R (21 ER), 39 BB, 114 K, 1.19 WHIP, .203 opponent average #156 on Baseball America's top 500.
Sounds like a raw guy with a great ceiling who needs refinement. Hope our staff can develop him well. Sounds promising.
Round 6, Pick 196: Matthew Barefoot, CF, Campbell .311/.407/.570, 14 HR, 48 RBI, 59 R, 29 BB, 24 K, 25 SB (6 CS), .977 OPS Odd swing mechanics have worked for him. Probably going to be in a corner, but they're not drafting him for his defense.
Barefoot and Brewer are both RH hitting LH throwing OFs. They join Jacob Meyers and Chas McCormick in the system with that distinction.
Round 7, Pick 226: Blair Henley, RHP, Texas Fastball, high-spin curve, changeup 6-4, 3.54 ERA, 73.2 IP, 74 H (2 HR allowed), 42 R (29 ER), 34 BB, 62 K, 1.48 WHIP, .257 opponent average
Given his lack of improvement at Texas I did not see Henley going nearly this high in the draft. Hopefully there's something there and Pierce and company screwed the pooch on developing him.
Yeah, hopefully there's something there. Also, the velo, which maxes at 92 per reports, needs to go up a few ticks, too.
