I'm disappointed that we are sitting here talking about refs. That really sucks.

I'm not extreme like some of you and it is likely I'll watch NBA till my death, but this whole issue is annoying and I hate it that it is discussed so much just because the refs cannot call the game how it should be called.

I'm sad about it too. I love this sport and would like to keep it pure. But if everyone keeps quiet about it that's a surefire way to ensure nothing will change. The only way we'll see positive change to the officiating is if we show we're displeased.

Only in the NBA does a ref admit to gambling, openly, and there are no repercussions. Wtf does Foster gamble on? Soccer, NFL, skating or college basketball..... Do not tell me this sombitch doesn't gamble on the NBA.
I read between the lines what Tim was saying about Foster being untouchable..... Translation, if Foster goes down he is taking the league with him.....

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if the game is called very fairly tonight. If it is, and the Rockets blow it themselves, it pretty much will wipe Game 1 out of existence in the media, and permanently set the narrative that the Rockets are just chokers in the playoffs. Foster is an experienced ref that is certainly capable of calling a fair game if he wants to, so that helps the league keep things in check tonight. Furthermore, if the Rockets win, then it pretty much erases ever bringing Foster up again even though that the Rockets are still 1-6 with him officiating. If the game is called fairly tonight, there's no way the league can lose. And if the Rockets lose, they'll be forever branded on top of it.

That's why I think Donaghy likes the Rockets tonight.

    Why is Scott Foster untouchable?
No one should be untouchable if they perform poorly.
Is it because he has dirt on the NBA league office had fixed as well as gambling issues with other referees?

I am hoping someone can chime in.

When you hear James Harden say that about a guy you know pretty well, first thing that comes to mind?

It's a conflict. There's relationships that exist in the NBA, both positive & negative between players & referees & it affects the game. There's a situation there where they aren't on the same page. Scott's making sure when he gets a chance to stick it to Harden, he is & Harden's feeling it pretty bad at this point.

So you agree with Harden that it's personal & Scott might be out of bounds when it comes to his duty as a NBA official.

Anything that can go either way, it's definitely not gonna go in the way of James Harden when it comes to a situation with a ref & player where there's some animosity there. Refs don't like to be embarrassed. I'm sure Foster feels Harden has tried to embarrass him by flopping & drawing fouls and bringing the crowd down on him. When he can, he definitely tries to stick it to him. There's no doubt about it. I've been in situations in locker rooms where we've laughed about situations like this in the past.

Seems pretty light to put it on Harden v. Foster from a Harden standpoint. Harden plays basketball, falls down, tries to embellish calls, tries to get calls. How is that directed at Foster? Any 3 officials on the court that night, that's who he's trying to "get to go for the call". How is that Foster related?

I think there's been times Foster has felt he's done this to try & embarrass him and bring the crowd down on him and yell & scream at him in front of 20,000 fans. There comes a time when there's animosity between refs & players and this is something that has progressively gotten worse and like I said before, when there's an opportunity to go either way or give someone benefit of the doubt, obviously Foster won't give it to Harden.

What, if anything, does the league in advance of the postseason, in advance of a series, in terms of communication with the officials about anything they'd like to see officiated a certain way. Not outside the rules or anything but are those conversations even had?

Absolutely. Like today, you'll look at the fact that game one was an absolute disaster. There were a lot of plays missed that should have been called. Those rules were set aside. There's a big emphasis now moving forward on making sure shooters can return to his space & defenders can't walk up into & under the offensive player. Tonight, if that takes place, they'll err no matter who the player is.

When you watch game one & hear Mike D'Antoni say the officials came up to him and said "We missed a few calls." Is that common for officials to tell a NBA coach that & is it common for the coach to share that with the media after the game?

Absolutely. You always review plays at halftime & if you screwed something up, you always want to go up to that coach or player and "Hey, I missed that one. I apologize and moving forward in this half, I want to make sure I don't miss it again." The problem was they continued to miss it & that's what became so frustrating for Houston & D'Antoni. When you know you missed one, you can't continue to miss them because you're not learning anything from it. That's why this became so frustrating for the entire Houston team.

If the player acts out, there's technicals, ejections, fines. I've never felt there's accountability for an official who gets it wrong besides these L2M reports. Those are almost like salt in the wound. Yeah, we messed up but OK, nothing goes on from here. Agree or disagree?

I agree. The officials who make these mistakes and I can go back to 2002-Kings/Lakers Game 6, continued to advance into & through the playoffs and make more money. Zach Zarba, even though his performance was abysmal, you'll see him through the Conference Finals & NBA Finals. When these refs screw up, they need to sit them down for the rest of the playoffs. I don't know any job where you can not do well & continue to get a bonus, which is shocking to me. You can see from the NBA standpoint of how bad they feel about the performance of the refs in not suspending Chris Paul. I don't think you can ever go back in the history of the NBA with a player making contact with a ref and he wasn't suspended for the next game. I'm kinda shocked he wasn't suspended. They're trying to do everything they can to give Houston benefit of the doubt after what just happened game one.

Is Scott Foster a good NBA official? Does he referee games well?

He does. He's at the top of the class when it comes to referees. He knows the rules. In great position. In good shape. He's a great leader on the floor. What hurts Scott is he's a little arrogant & cocky. The NBA created a bit of a monster with him as they did back in the day with Steve Javie & Joe Crawford. He's a little full of himself & basically knows he's untouchable. If he could get that out of his game, he'd be more accepted by players & coaches.

Your situation was revisited by the ESPN.com article. One paragraph with regards tonight says "The records show Donaghy placed 134 calls to referee Scott Foster — more than the 126 calls Donaghy made to his bookie — between October 2006 and April 2007." Is that true and if so, why so many phone calls to Scott Foster?

To be honest, I don't know if it's true or not. It could be true. I was the Godfather of his son. He was the Godfather of my daughter. We talked a number of times. We had a lot of the same interests, when you talk about golf, basketball and even gambling. We loved to go to the casinos. We loved to bet on sporting events. We had a lot of things in common. When you're on the road & become bored, you call anyone that will pick up the phone & speak to you. Yeah, we had lot of phone calls that went back & forth.

In this article, just to clarify, it did say the majority of the calls lasted no longer than 2 minutes and happened prior to & after games that you officiated on and on which you admitted wagering.

Again, I wish I had an answer for you but there were so many things in that article that were fabricated & made up. I don't know that that information is true to be honest with you.

Do you think the Rockets get a fair shake tonight?

I think they do. I think they get more than a fair shake. Anything marginal will go in the favor of Houston. Scott Foster likes to go against the home team and make sure the road team gets a fair shake. Anything marginal will go in favor of Houston and I take the 5.5 and the Houston Rockets tonight.
