They'll regret the Mathieu deal; Okafor and Hyde signings are on the same level as Roby & Gipson, IMO. I'm not advocating sitting and waiting; I'm reacting to the market, which went bonkers and sent players the Texans likely had interest in, out of their price range. I would rather not have Trent Brown than pay Trent Brown the most money anyone has ever paid a left tackle.
Whether they regret the Mathiru deal or not remains to be seen; but we know good teams do go out and make FA moves. I think the Texans could have made the Roby and Gipson moves AND made a big move as well. And I don't like the Roby deal. If he is a one-year stop-gap option, I would have gone a different route and would have cost less against the salary cap. I'm not going to go on my soap-box about worrying about billionaire's money but I'll say this: if your goal is to get the best players, you get the best players. They have the salary cap space. They can front-load the salary so it doesn't strangle them in the future.
Quality over quantity and size doesn't matter. But "best players" in this context is relative. Do you honestly think Trent Brown is the best left tackle in football?
I agree but the Chiefs also lost A LOT. All seems relatively fine because of Mahomes/Reid which is a big testament to how good they are, but honestly think they might actually be worse on paper, especially on defense.
True. They did lose a lot, though most were from a defense that couldn't keep up last year. But they are reducing the positions of need they will have to address during the draft. A draft where they got more picks from the Dee Ford trade.
Quality over quantity...except when your quality gets injured or doesn't pan out and you're stuck with Kendall Lamm and Davenport. Trent Brown is one of the best left tackles. One of the best 5, 10, 15 or whatever tackles. It would be nice to say that about anyone on the offensive line.
I will say again...given their glaring need for help on the OL, I'm not sure it's possible for them to overpay to protect Deshaun and attempt to maximize the years before they have to start committing a massive chunk of their salary cap room for him.
