The Texans disagree with you. They had no interest in Jackson, and, let's be honest, a year, none of you would've, either. No, it really doesn't. The vast majority of teams that are spending did not make the playoffs last year. If the Texans do literally nothing but draft players, they have enough pieces to still be very good.
Sure. He makes it better, which is to say, what? Mediocre? Average? Is that worth the (at the time) highest OT contract in league history? Le'Veon Bell is the one, true difference maker on the market - and he's a RB which most of us understand is a risky investment. Every other free agent comes with loaded with more questions than answers. That doesn't mean you don't grab some of them - but when the costs start skyrocketing, you better be damn sure you know what you're getting. Remember, these contracts have ripple effects... If you start to look at extending Watson, let's say... Do you want a potentially mediocre OL like Trent Brown affecting your cap space and money allocation?.... Maybe. But it's not as easy as PAY HIM! WE NEED HIM. Good, smart front offices balance the two while remaining fiscally responsible. Everyone's screaming the Texans should be more like the Astros - *this* is exactly how the Astros approach free agency.
Without even looking at last years big free agency spenders, I would venture to guess the teams that didnt make the playoffs like you said, have a qb problem. The Texans do not.
So... you're advocating to spend heavily in free agency because two years ago, the Texans spent heavily in free agency and it was such a colossal bust, it cost the GM his job?......
Those teams are better because they are doing something in FA? Weird.... OLine could be helped with Williams or another RT, it doesnt have to be LT or bust with trent brown, but this front office loves Henderson.. Cool... And Bell was cheap as hell and could have helped both the Oline and be better than Lamar Miller. In Fact, get rid of lamar miller and Ryan griffin and Bell was less than free.
because the Astros know how to draft and tanked to maximize the potential of them landing great prospects. That is not the path the Texans have taken. They've wanted to compete right away...
The tackle position is the most important on the o-line, that's why they get paid more. They could have fixed the tackle and worked from there. Imagine if they signed Solder and Kelemete and drafted Rankins to fill the other tackle spot. That is a much better line than what they had. This off-season they address the RT position in FA or in the draft. That is better than mediocre. Watson is the reason you want to go out and get these contracts now. Front-load them so when it's time to pay Deshaun you have the cap room to do so. The Astros went after arguably the best pitcher of our generation realizing they had a young core of stars and a window that won't be open forever. Right or wrong, that's not what the Texans are doing with a core of Watson, Hopkins, Fuller, Cunningham, Cole, Reid, and Foreman.
