I read some more about it and it really was a genius deal for both the Mets and Bonilla. He has that money coming to him until he's 71 years old. The Mets had financial flexibility because of it. I'm just still amazed by it.

Neither player improves the team...cheaper or not. They're not getting rid of players for the sake of saving money. Both players play key roles on what should be the best team in baseball...again. Why you'd want to get rid of them AND 3 top 20 prospects for 2 players that do not improve the team at all is beyond me. Then again, pretty much all of the trade ideas you've had are beyond understanding so I don't know why I bother responding.

SD's opt out clause after 5 years likely make that deal significantly more attractive than the White Sox one.

While the guaranteed money is always a hallmark of any deal, I also think giving the player flexibility to get out of it if it doesn't work out for them (or if they can get an even bigger deal while they still have some decent years left) makes it a better deal.

    Your crow, sir.

Turns out I was way lowballing Machado. Still think Harper only gets $320-350M. Sticking by my other estimates.

Yep, all of the reporting was way off base

In fact all of the complaining some of the players have been doing about owners needs to be directed at Machado and Harper. The big money offers apparently HAVE been there, they just haven't been taking them pushing everything else back.

Gonna be interesting to see how quickly Harper signs now, and if it's not in Philly i'd bet on Keuchel signing there quickly after Harper signs somewhere

I'm guessing the Padres offer is some what recent as they likely did not expect to be able to sign him. In the last month or so, the Padres told their fans that payroll wouldn't likely go up this year, but next year it would. Though, I expect he had some comparable offers (within 20 million or so) on table for a while. I'm guessing Harper is holding up Keuchel and Marwin. I think Philles want to get Harper before they make formal offers to other players.

Agreed here. Machado's deal may help avert a strike a couple years down the road, as it establishes that the owners are still willing to shell out big money. But you better be a free agent before you hit age 28. The MLB Network guys were talking this morning that it will be interesting to see how much Arenado gets next year. His numbers are not that much different from Machado, but he will be age 29 when the 2020 season starts.

If we could extend JV or Cole before the season starts that would be fantastical

The more plausible extension candidate would be signing Springer through 2021+

EDIT: Just realized you were referring to Marwin/Dallas and not Cole/JV extensions.

I agree that Springer is most likely extension candidate. It would keep 3 of the Big Four locked up for a while.

I'm sure he's well aware of what 30+ year old free agents are currently commanding, both in years and $/year.

He's going into year 2 of the $24 million dollar deal he signed last year (negating arbitration), with one more potential arb year for next year leading into free agency.

I could see them trying to secure a 3 year $55-$60 million dollar deal now, with some sort of option year for year 4. Takes him through age 32 with the team and buys out 2-3 years of free agency.

    Deals Id like:
    Springer $75M/4yr extension thru 2023
Keuchel $35M/2yr with 3rd year vesting option
    Cole $140M/4yr extension thru 2023
    Verlander $80M/3yr extension thru 2022
    McHugh $35M/3yr extension thru 2022
    Pressly $50M/4yr extension thru 2023
    Bregman $280M/10yr extension thru 2029
    Correa $75M/4yr extension thru 2023
Marwin $8M/1yr with 2nd and 3rd yr vesting options

Not sure any of those guys would take those deals but I would feel good about the value they’d return on any of those contracts. I would consider Springer the most likely. Free agency could be pretty ugly for him especially if he has a down year next season.
