Pretty much everyone in this thread that’s complaining either 1) has no clue how the salary cap works or 2) has yet to offer a constructive thought in general. There’s no point in even responding to people that can’t do a basic google search, or have never attempted to construct a trade, because they don’t learn.
It's a serious issue and it never happened like this, so must be Tilman along with some pride of Morey regarding Melo. Seriously, wtf is going on??
We need to rebuild the front office. We need some honest medical staff. A better talent evaluator GM, this Melo, ennis, chriss, clark, nuannaly, harstenstein... is crap. You had a 15 year run
Too think this sht show of a roster started with the signing of Anderson. Fking anchor of a contract deny us from doing anything.
I'm starting to wonder about that as well. What did Les see in Tilman to hand over this franchise to him? Tilman is setting this franchise back in the prime of Harden's career.
Les saw the deal with the devil the Paul gamble was. It was worth it to take a shot at the mighty GSW to make the Paul trade with a wink wink for a future deal the following year. But it was clear that Paul would not be able to live up to that massive 4 year deal at 33 with an already fragile body in the long run. The deal really was a short term shot at the throne. But neither could the Rockets not follow through with the extension. That would cripple the organization in all future deals with agents and players. Hard to recover from that level of dishonesty. So Les saw it was a narrow window with an inevitable bad outcome. The question always was how narrow of a window. Most of us thought the window was slightly bigger than 1 year (and who knows it could be) but that is looking more and more unlikely. The argument people are making that giving Paul significantly less $ would not give the Rockets more money to sign players is both right and wrong. To get under the cap the Paul contract would have to have been very small and that would have been the only way to outright sign players with more than the minimum (exception not withstanding). That part is true. But what the Rockets are balking at is giving minimum contracts over the cap bc the Paul contract (and others) pushes them so far over the cap. The luxury tax goes up the higher you go over the cap and it also goes up the longer you stay over the cap. So the size of the Paul contract does indeed affect how the Rockets can pursue players b/c the luxury tax payments go up exponentially when you go way over the cap. That said for the reasons listed above they really had no choice but to make the deal.
The Chris Paul extension is not what is killing the Rockets' flexibility. Whether the money was given to Paul or a different 2nd superstar, it needed to be paid if you want to compete with the Warriors. It's the 19 million tied up in Brandin Knight and Marquese Chriss, along with 2.4 million wasted on Melo that has the Rockets shopping in the clearance rack to find talent. That 21.4 million would enable the Rockets to add multiple rotation pieces and find common ground with House.
I disagree give that money to someone who can stay on the floor when you need him. thats what killed us in the playoffs and its killing us now. as far as knight and chriss thats correct as well but both are killing us and both hav e to do with the front office.
By definition any $ paid to anyone who isn’t playing or producing is causing the problem. Is Paul more likely to play and produce than those 2? Of course. But it remains to be seen if Paul is still a superstar. It was pretty clear he wasn’t gonna be a superstar for the 4 year duration of the contract.
