I haven't been to many synagogues that didn't have an armed guard -- and that's just as true in Europe as it is the US.
Well, clearly the shooter found one where there wasn't any security at all and it's probably time for that to change.
While he probably scoped them out ahead of time, he was specifically targeting that synagogue because of some perceived ties either real or imaginary to Illegal immigrants and the caravan that is now in Mexico. That said, if he faced some security on the way in he might not have been able to kill as many people. Places that know they are a potential threat have a responsibility IMO to work towards their own defense. There have been several instances where potential mass shootings were subverted by security or even just people carrying that shot at or killed an attacker. It's not a guarantee, but it's certainly better than nothing.
I've been to some churches that had armed security, but it was all concealed carry so they looked just like ordinary churchgoers. Hell I even met one preacher that kept a handgun in his pulpit in case of some kind of crazy emergency after churches started getting shot up.
Where are you going to temple? I'm not a regular attender by any stretch...but I've been to a couple recently. Beth Shalom in The Woodlands has no armed guards.

I’ll never understand the appeal this guy has on the right. He’s a smarter sounding GOP’er and recites the same talking points. Just dresses it up a bit more on the delivery to seem more thoughtful and insightful. In the end, he still takes you to the same poltical destination you’d get from FoxNews or an NRA ad. If you’re going to feed your mind this garbage, you might as well get entertained in the process. Shapiro is an annoying snooze fest.
