Hi everyone. Really curious how people feel about Maldonado. I live in Boston so listen to the games on XM vs. getting to watch them. I haven't followed Maldonado closely so maybe I'm missing something, so would appreciate everyone's thoughts. I went to Games 1 and 2 in Fenway and have to say I was extremely unimpressed. I know McCann was injured but wondering how bad his situation is. If Maldonado is in the game for his catching ability or great arm, he didn't throw anyone out and the two passed balls were brutal. Is he in there because we have no better option or is he really the best we have at catcher right now? Thanks anyone who responds. I didn't see a thread on the HP but if there's an active conversation, I can go there.
He effectively has shut down the running game which is why they traded for him. The passed balls are definitely worrisome though
McCann probably can't play anymore . Coming off an injury , his timing isn't where it needs to be . Going with Maldonado is the right call
The passed balls weren't ideal but he has been pretty good at blocking balls and shutting down their running game. Roll with him.
The Cold Weather and his Bad Knee is not a good idea, Standing and Squatting 100s of times in the Cold. But in the warm weather of Houston, Brian should be more comfortable.
OP, you wanna go with Stassi who's inexperienced? Maldy's pitch-calling is good. His arm is good. He has good rapport with our pitchers in such a short time. He isn't good at blocking balls. Plus unfamiliarity with McCullers led to that breakdown. They should have given themselves a mound visit or two to get on the same page.
That McCullers KnuckleCurveball has more movement than any Curveball on the staff, maybe Maldonado whole career he has never seen anything like that pitch. Hopefully a bullpen session with McCullers and Maldonado can get better used to catching that pitch.
I prefer the 7 time all-star as well. Although I would not mind Playoff Ausmus walking through those doors.
