The Astros don't tend to pay market price for closers and late innings guys. They obviously traded an at the time haul to get Giles in his cheap team control years and are paying Rondon $4.2m this year. They prefer to see if they can get middle-relievers/set-up guys to succeed in higher leverage situations (e.g. Harris, Gregerson). That's also not reasonable money, that's healthy elite closer money. Only 3 relievers are making more than $15m this year.
Maybe Jones would be re-invigorated playing on a contender. I wouldn't give up much for him (especially with his contract), but I'd take him. Andrew McCutchen would be intriguing if made available.
Looking at his numbers in total and not just batting average, Springer, Reddick, and Kemp (he's got almost as many ABs as Marisnick) are easily better. Marwin is close, but provides more position flexibility. Going forward, Tucker needs to worry more about Kemp stealing his starting job than the Astros trading for an OF.
Assuming he stays healthy and pitches well, my guess for Brittons next contract is ~$42M/3yr with a 4th year vesting option worth ~$15M with a $3M buyout if it doesn’t vest.
Right, but haven't we kinda been unsuccessful with this approach? I mean, we are an Elite team that hasn't had, not even close to a designated, playoff tested, almost bullet proof closer. If the rumors are true, and we are all in on Britton is kinda hard for me to fathom, that Luhnow has no intention to try and sign him to a new contract. Maybe he just likes his impact this year that much Idk. I hope you are right tho that 15M being more then enought, hope all the teams get the memo tho.
HA HA HA HA. The guy some on Astros internet were ready to commit seppuku over because we wouldn't trade Tucker and Whitley and anything else not bolted to the floor for.
Unsuccessful?!? Scoreboard? The bullpen, while not shutdown or perfect, is not particularly worse than last year and they won the WS. I don't connect being all in on a rental player as having anything to do with resigning him. There are rare cases where players resign with the new team after being traded, but there's actually more instances where the player resigns with the original team, much less a completely new team. What does "all-in" on Britton even mean? If they were actually "all-in" they'd offer Whitley and be done with it. I just take that to mean they want to get the last decent rental reliever on the market really badly and aren't being subtle about it; that doesn't mean they're willing to meet Baltimore's price yet.
Only tangently related to the thread topic in the sense that it highlights the lack of offensive holes, but here’s the current wRC+ of one potential 2019 position player roster: CF Springer 115 3B Bregman 155 2B Altuve 140 SS Correa 129 1B Gurriel 110 RF Reddick 110 DH White 132 C Stassi 121 LF Kemp 138 Bench: McCann 72, Davis 69, Marisnick 63 Obviously debatable if White, Stassi, and Kemp could sustain their production over a full season of playing everyday, but pretty incredible they’ve got 9 guys each producing at least 10% better than league average.
Same same. I think this’ll wrap up by midnight tomorrow. If Baltimore is smart, they want time to shop their other assets.
I thought it was pretty obvious we were talking about finding the closer and late inning guys, and Lunhow unwillingness to pay market price for them. From that standpoint I believe we have been unsuccessful in finding a reliable high leverage guy that can close games when Championships are decided (we have to see Rondon) We can all discuss how important a bullpen is when your starting rotation is so nasty and can eat innings, but, if we assume that Lunhow believes in seeing how middle relievers perform in high leverage situations, why all of a sudden we out there upping our offer (supposedly) for a closer that is a rental with injury concerns? Does Lunhow believe that his impact is that great this year, or does he believe we have a chance (and are willing) to pay an elite closer big money and compete to bring him back? Those were my questions, when seeing the reports since I can't go out butt naked and celebrate just yet since this thing is not done yet .
I know it's probably unrealistic. But Castellanos can also play some LF and he flat out mashes. It would be a nuts on the table type of move but I'd like the lineup to have a little bit more.
FYI it was Iglesias who I had heard we were heavily targeting a few weeks ago. Targeting isn’t even the right word, it was a very “he will be ours by the deadline” proclamation, at least as it was relayed to me. That said a lot can change in 3 weeks and i for one prefer Britton.
