Sure, but in this instance they are legitimately not desperate. They have their franchise QB already.

Weed Eater is a good training camp arm. He won't be on the opening day roster unless there is an injury.

We'll find out later who the backup is.

    nothing to worry about--

Now on Mad Radio-- @McClain_on_NFL says he doesn't see the #Texans bringing in another quarterback and Weeden will be the backup to Deshaun Watson in 2018, Taylor Heinicke will be third string.

jaja -- I always feel like Mclain go against the fans.. He does it out of despise.
For Example - when Matheau was let go - first thing he says the texans are only intersted in the Honeybadger if the price is right (Once other Media Outlets stated the Texans are serious about him) he comes back and says the Texans are very serious..
He see all the angry fans that dont want Xavier Su filo (But goes on the radio stating we will bring him back) thanks god Titans signed him

He's awful. He's still stuck in the oiler days. Aaron Wilson is probably the best as far as Texans info

This is perfect, we don’t want to win if Watson gets hurt anyways. I’ll take the first pick in next years draft.

Are Texans Repeating Mistakes Of 2017 By Signing Weeden In 2018?

"But, he knows the system." These were the five words used to justify why quarterback Tom Savage was not only on the Houston Texans roster in 2017, but the starter heading into Week 1.

After quarterback Deshaun Watson caused Bill O'Brien to adjust his "system" in 2017 I thought the days of justifying an immobile system-knowing quarterback's spot on the roster were over, but apparently I was wrong.

The Texans have announced they are signing quarterback Brandon Weeden to a contract to potentially backup Watson in 2018 and upon hearing the news I asked myself the same question many others asked themselves, WHY?!

In an offseason where backup quarterback should be one of the top priorities for first-year GM Brian Gaine surely he and O'Brien aren't repeating the mistakes of 2017.

According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, who was the first to break the news, Weeden's familiarity with O'Brien's system was one of the main reasons the Texans were interested in bringing back the 34-year-old quarterback, who spent a few games in 2015 and all of 2016 with the organization. McClain also says Weeden, who was cut by the Texans before the beginning of last season, will backup Watson in 2018.

In fairness, last offseason McClain said Weeden would be the backup quarterback and Watson would be the third-string quarterback to start the season so his QB depth chart predictions should be taken with a grain of salt. One can only hope The General is wrong again.

Anyone trying to sell you on Weeden as the Texans backup quarterback in 2018 was likely trying to sell you on Tom Savage as the starter in 2017 for the exact same reasons. Both are tall, have arm talent, look good in practice and of course, know the system, but they're the same guy. Savage, who the Texans kept last season before cutting Weeden, might even be the better player at this point in their careers.

In his career, Weeden has thrown 31 touchdown passes and 30 interceptions while completing 58 percent of his passes. Savage has thrown five touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing 57.5 percent of his passes.

If there were a practice hero section of the Pro Football Hall Of Fame Weeden would be selected on the first ballot. Few quarterbacks look as good as Weeden throwing the football without a pass rush in a t-shirt and shorts. If the Texans signed Weeden to simply practice and throw the ball to receivers during the week then they got one of the best. However, if the Texans signed Weeden to backup Watson would be the first major mistake of the Gaine era.

It's still early in the offseason and there is plenty of time for the Texans to bring in a competent backup quarterback. Weeden backing up Watson would be a disaster, but look on the bright side, he knows the system.

This is a normal Bill O'Bumbler move.

Bring back some retread "you know well." Just like bringing in Mallet and Hoyer.

Agreed, and even if they want to win if Watson gets hurt, it's not a realistic goal.

If Watson stays healthy does the backup really matter? Let’s not forget he tore the ACL fully in practice against air after getting a late hit on him during the Seattle game. All signs point to him being healthy, especially since he won’t see real game action until the regular end of the recovery cycle for the injury falls around the end of training camp. He could get hurt, but so could literally everyone else in the NFL. I think people are way too concerned about the backup QB.

If Watson gets injured and is out for the season, the Texans are screwed*

If Watson gets injured is out for 2/3 games, the Texans desperately need a backup QB who can give them a chance to win. 2/3 games can be a difference maker in the playoff hunt. Most teams do not have this type of backup QB.

*unless Nick Foles is the backup QB
