Here's the deal. Of course Melo would love to play in Houston. Paul and Harden are HOF backcourt. So Knicks bring in Portland for 3 team deal. Knicks want Harkless. Portland gets Anderson. Then Portland gets smart. If Knicks want Harkless, they'll take Melo themselves! Why not? Melo is better than Anderson. So now Houston is out of the picture. Either Melo stays in NY for one more year or he goes to Portland where he can leave after one year. Why should Melo consider that? Dame and CJ are All Star level players in crowded West. After Harden and Klay, who is better shooting guard than CJ? Maybe DeRozen but he is out East. Lillard is coming off a career year. Check the numbers. Then you have Nurkic, also an All Star level talent. Blazers went .700 once Nurkic joined the team including a win over Houston in which Nurkic went for 19/11. Overreacting about Nurkic? Maybe but Nurk had a game last season where he had 28 points 20 rebounds 8 assists and 6 blocks. Would Melo rather play with that or Capela? The answer is still Houston because Melo wants to play with his buddy Chris Paul. That said, neither Cleveland nor Houston have anything the Knicks want and the Blazers do- Maurice Harkless. So it comes down to Melo. Does he want to stay and lose in New York or join three very talented players in Portland? With Nurk healthy, Portland already has a chance at 4 or 5 seed. With Melo, 2 or 3 is in range and he might like that over the Knicks.

Also, Melo would rather lose in NY for one year than lose in Portland for one year. At least he'd be home and with his family in NY rather than across the country.

You left out the fact that Melo has a NTC, and basically calls the shots about where he ends up. If he tells NYK that he only wants to go to Houston, otherwise he will spend all season poisoning Kristaps on the organization, the Knicks really have no choice. He still holds all the leverage, which by proxy, means Houston has the leverage.

Lillard is 2 time All Star and two seasons ago was All NBA ahead of Harden. CJ averages 20+ and would make All Star team out East. Melo would not lose in Portland. They are 4/5 seed without him. Like I said, Portland was .700 with Nurkic. If adding Melo, means Blazers lose, then Melo is the problem and why would Houston or anyone want him?

Just had a scary thought. The Knicks keeping Melo in NY against his will might be worse off for us than them. They're in the craphole anyway they don't have much to lose. 2 things are delaying this deal: NY refusing to settle for our crap and Hou refusing to offer anything but crap. If Melo gets pissed off enough would it be possible from him to pressure Morey to add real assets to the deal? Like Ariza or Gordon real assets? He screwed his incoming team before in the Denver trade.
