This is a reminder that Daryl Morey has acquired two top 7 players in the last 6 years with no elite asset. Build the man a damn statue.
"utah jazz acquire ricky rubio per woj. Gordon Hayward announces he is leaving via free agency sources say"
If they waited to sign him in free agency, he would not have been asking for the 24M for this year his contract pays him, it likely would have been much closer to 35M. Doing it this way also allows the Rockets to be over the cap so they can use multiple exceptions that would not have been available had they done it later(after July 1). They were gonna lose assets either way, in order to sign him in FA they would have had to trade a bunch of guys to other teams to clear cap space, which would have cost more picks just to get someone to take Anderson's contract (saw a story that said teams asking for 2 picks just to do that one move). On its face it was a good or possibly great move, we wont know for sure till the team takes the floor in October.
I'm amazed that everyone is so excited that we got another guard instead of a top forward, and traded off all our backup forwards in a position we were far more lacking at rim protection to begin with. So now who backs up Ariza and Ryno, or Clint? Honestly, I would have loved to have acquired an All Star forward than guard. Ryno and Ariza are no young pups.
We still have MLE and a huge TPE. Our core is largely intact (minus bev) and we got another playmaker. We can easily pick up a serviceable forward in FA. Is CP3 the best fit? No Is he one of the best players in the league? Yes This deal is a steal and leaves us with so many options going forward. It's a masterful move
Right haha. I mean even if you assume we fail at any attempt to get another star, we very likely could use the TPE in a sign and trade to grab say Taj Gibson and then split the MLE up for Korver and Sefalosha and use the minimum to sign Brandon Bass. Not saying that's a likely scenario, but it's realistic in terms of dollars and suddenly you have depth all over.
"All our backup forwards?" First, Montrezl Harrell didn't play, so he wasn't providing rim protection from the bench. I like Sam Dekker, but he is too young and inconsistent to believe he will ever be more than a 7th man. At his current ability level, guys like him are a dime a dozen. Losing Pat Bev is unfortunate, but you have to give something to get something.
I just wanted to come in and say that I had CP3 as my favorite non-Rocket in my signature for years on this forum. Only he and Steve Novak have held that honor! So glad to have him here
Wait.... so do the Rockets put James at Center now to take advantage of his rebounding skills or bring him off the bench to win 6th man of the year once again?
