From the Rockets standpoint, now the decision to waive him is July instead of March, that also is a much better option for the team.

I think this is a middle ground that neither side lose much.

I think the Rockets won this battle. Sure, D-Mo gets a little more money, but Les and Morey will gladly give that up in exchange for being able to trade him without his approval.

    Not really.

What the Rockets got in the renegotiation is way more valuable than what DMo got.

Consider, DMo could actually be playing decent enough to live up to the contract, but the Rockets either (i) have an agreement to sign someone like Gordon Hayward or Blake Griffin, or (ii) can benefit by trading DMo to a team that needs cap space, and in those cases, DMo's second+ years won't be guaranteed.

So he has to go back into FA. Unrestricted this time, and theoretically if healthy he still gets a good deal, but its a risk.

And of course the bigger risk is moving that year 2 guarantee date anyway. Before DMo could have been ok through March 1st, got injured after, but still had year 2 guaranteed. Now, if he is injured in that time frame from 3/1-early July, he'll be cut.

Bully worked because (i) Rockets got some very valuable concessions, and (ii) DMo took on way more risk.

I'm sure DM would be happy to renegotiate contracts with many of his players to have team options in early July for every year of their contract, and in exchange pay them slightly more.

So basically, Morey offers one guaranteed year, 2nd year non guaranteed.

They hold out and sign an offer, which is more money with added bonuses, with the Nets, with waive dates which makes it very hard to to terminate the deal in year two.

Morey matches, which undoes the bonuses, so its less money, but more non guaranteed years

They don't report then renegotiate back to the original deal which they turned down, but have to add additional team options to the back end.

So their hold out, basically cost them 1/4 of a seasons salary, and two extra team option years.

    Brilliant agenting BJ, just brilliant.

Agree, money wise its break even, but for Morey, this is HUGE for the trade value, its a 8 mil chip nonetheless.

your narrative will be different once someone gets hurt. the pace @ which we are playing is taxing and will take a toll on the players.

this is a low-risk, high-reward sign. if he's ruining chemistry, trade him in the spring.

Daryl just went and smacked BJ Armstrong in the face about 10 times with this new deal. Holy crap.
