Is it financially feasible to keep together this nucleus?

I know everyone is very down on the team right now, but separating ourselves from the emotions of Thursday's emotions, even if we most likely aren't ready for primetime, we most likely still end up going a very respectable 11-5 or even 12-4. And anyone reasonable would have to agree that the future is bright.

Not fully understanding the NFL salary cap, except that it is far more constraining than the NBA, will it be feasible to keep together this young nucleus?

I'm assuming the nucleus on offense is Osweiler, Hopkins, and Fuller, with the other parts, including running back, probably interchangeable. Hopkins will get his big deal and Fuller is some time away. And I'm assuming the nucleus defensively, for now, is Watt, Clowney, Mercilus, and Kareem Jackson, with Kevin Johnson probably growing into Joseph's spot.

With Clowney likely to get absolutely paid, can this team be kept together?

Yes, but why does nobody ever mention the OL?

You need to have some very good rookie and value deals to make it work

Remember our OL got downgraded because we let Brooks and Jones go then signed cheaper Allen and Bergstrom.

Then we were able to afford Osweiler and Miller

Our OLine may not have been as bad had Martin not been hurt. That was set to be one of the very good rookie deals.

Bergstrom was signed as straight up depth, never to start.

True on all fronts, but now we/Texans have to deal with the aftermath....

I don't want to turn out like the Bears; losing Marshall, Forte, and Bennett

This was our first magical year in a while where we didn't suffer from attrition (happens to most NFL teams every season). We locked-in guys like Merciless early, had a decent mix of young emerging talent, cut veterans at the right time (AJ, Foster) etc...

We'll be taking our inevitable hit ahain soon.

Cushing's contract can come off the books next year. You can franchise guys like Clowney and Hopkins for a while, but that usually doesn't end well.

The answer is probably no. You'll be losing good players soon. Possibly even Osweiler in 2 years.

Well we actually lost Brandon Books and Ben Jones on the OL. Also Duane Brown is injured and getting older. So really 3.

Brooks and Brown were borderline elite and Jones was solid.

Ah, good call. I forgot about the o-line attrition. We did bring in Allen who I got the impression the organization thought was a system upgrade.

Allen had a very good year last year, though it was his first good years after some inconsistent and injury years before.

I think Brooks got paid quite a bit more than Allen, which makes me think Brooks was seen as the better guy. We'll see I guess.

The only way they lose Osweiler is if they don't really care about retaining him. What is the last team that lost a good/great QB that they really wanted to keep? Teams always make the numbers work for QBs.

    Does Denver losing Osweiler count?

Oz's contract is only guaranteed for this year and next if I am not mistaken. They can cut ties with him after next year. The way he's doing now, he won't be here

My problem with them doing that is it wastes 2 years of Watt in his prime

We don't really have a choice; no one in their right mind would trade for him and if they did, they would demand high pick compensation. The other thing we could do is draft a QB this upcoming year and next year like the Pats did with Jimmy G and Brissett
