thx for putting this here. the ordinance that failed to pass is similar in houston. it's a law that also allows places like gaslamp to operate the way that they do.

For those who (like me) have no idea about the big picture of the law, here is a helpful sentence from the Charlotte Observer:

So basically there are a host of discriminations involved here.

Good question, but the answer is sadly too easy: because [redacted for D&D discussion], that's why, and that's the only reason.

I guarantee you: if the NBA just moved the venue without the law, nobody would have said anything, because they don't care, actually, if the NBA moves the venue.

That leaves one thing: people are mad because the NBA is recognizing [redacted for D&D]. But just like the NBA has every right to do this, angry [redacted] who in truth hate the [redacted] community, have every right to quit watching NBA games. Apparently, the NBA does not give two farts about that eventuality.

read the damn bill people, not some description of it

    it's very short

    http://www.ncleg.net/Sessions/2015E2/Bills/House/PDF/H2v4.pdf

    here are the "controversial" provisions

This is the "schools must have separate bathrooms for boys and girls" provision. Pretty scary stuff.

This is the "ensure someone with a penis is not allowed to enter school locker rooms or bathrooms with your daughter" provision. So bigoted, I know.

This is the "women in government facilities have a right to use of a bathroom without a man joining them" provision.

That's it. There is another provision giving state laws supremacy over city law (which I don't agree with as a federalist, but is hardly worthy of losing the All-Star game).

Silver is mixing sports and politics.

This is terrible. The NBA continues to erode its fan base. First, they punish the city that generally supports their belief in attempts to punish the state. As their fan base continues to diminish, they make up for it by promoting their product in China, which is chalked full of human rights violations.

Lets see, do I promote my product in a city where people with bathroom obsession issues are denied to use whatever bathroom they feel like that day ....or do I take my product where people are paid pennies a day in harsh work environments.

Fortunately for North Carolina, nobody gives a ****. And its exactly why they moved it.

Is there evidence that the NBA's fan support is eroding?

Current North Carolina law (which requires transgender women to share a bathroom with men) is considered by the league to be discriminatory and unsafe for transgender people. And I guess at least some of the tens of thousands of expected attendees from around the country would be transgender.

This is without hyperbole, the worst thing that has ever happened to sports or North Carolina.

Every country has human rights issue.

NBA should ban all-star games in United States because this country shoot black people for no reason.

"laws to protect LGBT" is a vacuous euphemism for laws outlawing single sex bathrooms

and HB2 says zero about private companies, they are free to have single sex bathrooms if they want (strangely enough, Silver isn't pushing for them in NBA arenas despite scolding North Carolina about it)

All HB2 says is that schools and government facilities must offer single sex bathrooms. That's it. It was passed because places like Charlotte were trying to implement single sex bathrooms in schools, so boys could be in there with your daughters.

I'm a federalist so I say Charlotte is free to pass dumb laws if they want. But that's not why Silver is preening with righteous indignation.

And to be fair, I don't think Silver has a clue what the bill does. This is pure virtue signaling. He wants the right people to perceive him as enlightened and tolerant and forward-thinking.
