Hi friends, this is basketball blog I recently started call BallAndOne. Being a 10+ year Rockets fan, my first post is analyzing why they have struggled so much this year.

Any feedback would be much appreciated.
Hope you enjoy the read! Thanks!

Great job. Well written, with nice analysis. Pretty comprehensive look at the season, and a balanced take on Harden.

Unfortunately it's a topic that's been covered ad nauseum (here on Clutchfans anyway), but you look at it much more rationally than anyone at ESPN!

well, for one thing, you claim "Harden lifted the Kardashian curse . . . "

I think you misunderstand the concept of a curse. Once you're cursed, you're cursed. Harden can't lift the curse. No one can.

    Really good stuff.

One thing that remains under explored is the composition of our turnovers and how that affects our drtg.

Yes we commit the same amount of turnovers overall but I'd like to see how many lead to transition buckets and difficult defensive situations compared to last year.

Another thing, bad shots can lead to bad defense.

I feel we have way more wtf possessions that lead to easy buckets the other way

ya this is a definite reason to how bad a defense we had, our shot selection and TOs lead to our transition D which i think was the worse in the league

No discipline on defense. Missed rotations and assignments.

In that same light, bad defense leads to more made shots, which lead to fewer transition offense opportunities for us. Not only does our defense give the opponents easier buckets, but it keeps us from forcing teams to play to our tempo.

I thought about this too. It seems like lot more Harden's seem to be live ball which usually directly lead to baskets. But when I investigated, I found somewhat conflicting stats:

    Opponent Points off Turnovers:
    2014-15: 18.3
    2015-16: 19.5

But interestingly, Opponent Fast Break Points declined:
    2014-15: 15.3
    2015-16: 14.3

So more points off turnovers, but less fast break points? First one makes sense because even though overall turnovers are down, Rockets defense is worse, hence more chance of scoring anyway. Second is interesting, can't really think of a reason for it..

I read somewhere that these stats are bad.

I think heypartner shed light on it at some point

Really great article! The defensive breakdowns are even worse with the random JB rotations. Would be interested in your take on JN

Also wanted to chime in. That was a really great article! Thanks for sharing. Highlighting how poor/underprepared the Rockets were in small ball lineups and how poor they were defensively in guarding the 3pt line were key points. Coaching really exposed here. And clearly the roster needs massaging.

if you analyze and do the math, everything stems from not mcfail or morlay or lesley cheaps, but jb. daddy's little boy got a free ride to the nba.

Pretty much nailed it. The roster and the "system" were never a match for each other and it just snowballed from there. Really well done!
