Morey's Best Deadline Deal

The following are all of Daryl Morey's deadline deals, which one is the best in your opinion in terms of 1) impact for that season and 2) overall value gained for the team?

February 21, 2008: Traded Kirk Snyder and a 2010 2nd round draft pick (Paulao Prestes was later selected) to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Gerald Green.

February 21, 2008: As part of a 3-team trade, the Houston Rockets traded Mike James and Bonzi Wells to the New Orleans Hornets; the Houston Rockets traded Malick Badiane to the Memphis Grizzlies; the Memphis Grizzlies traded Sergei Lishouk to the Houston Rockets; the New Orleans Hornets traded Bobby Jackson, Adam Haluska and a 2008 2nd round draft pick (Maarty Leunen was later selected) to the Houston Rockets; and the New Orleans Hornets traded Marcus Vinicius to the Memphis Grizzlies.

February 19, 2009: As part of a 3-team trade, the Houston Rockets traded Rafer Alston to the Orlando Magic; the Memphis Grizzlies traded Kyle Lowry to the Houston Rockets; the Orlando Magic traded Brian Cook to the Houston Rockets; and the Orlando Magic traded Adonal Foyle, Mike Wilks and a 2009 1st round draft pick (DeMarre Carroll was later selected) to the Memphis Grizzlies.

February 18, 2010: As part of a 3-team trade, the Houston Rockets traded Joey Dorsey and Carl Landry to the Sacramento Kings; the Houston Rockets traded Tracy McGrady to the New York Knicks; the New York Knicks traded Jordan Hill, Jared Jeffries and a 2012 1st round draft pick (Royce White was later selected) to the Houston Rockets; the New York Knicks traded Larry Hughes to the Sacramento Kings; the Sacramento Kings traded Hilton Armstrong and Kevin Martin to the Houston Rockets; and the Sacramento Kings traded Sergio Rodriguez to the New York Knicks. Houston had the option to swap 1st round draft picks with New York in 2011 but did not do so.

February 24, 2011: Traded Aaron Brooks to the Phoenix Suns for Goran Dragic and a 2011 1st round draft pick (Nikola Mirotic was later selected).

February 24, 2011: Traded Shane Battier and Ishmael Smith to the Memphis Grizzlies for DeMarre Carroll, Hasheem Thabeet and a future 1st round draft pick.


March 15, 2012: Traded Jordan Hill to the Los Angeles Lakers for Derek Fisher and a 2014 1st round draft pick.

March 15, 2012: Traded Jonny Flynn, Hasheem Thabeet and a 2012 2nd round draft pick (Will Barton was later selected) to the Portland Trail Blazers for Marcus Camby.

February 20, 2013: Traded Cole Aldrich, Toney Douglas, Patrick Patterson and cash to the Sacramento Kings for Francisco Garcia, Tyler Honeycutt and Thomas Robinson.

February 21, 2013: Traded Marcus Morris to the Phoenix Suns for a 2013 2nd round draft pick (Isaiah Canaan was later selected).

The TMac deal has turned out kind of strangely:

We were all happy about the draft considerations that we got from NY. As it turned out, the "pick swap" never materialized because the Knicks had a good season. The other draft pick wasn't bad-- a mid-first rounder, but we ended up choosing Royce White with it.

Rookie lottery pick Jordan Hill looked like a good asset at the time, but he never developed much. We did use his expiring contract a couple years later to eat what we thought would be a non-expiring salary and get a draft pick in the bargain. That draft pick ended up a part of the package traded to OKC for James Harden.

The salary that we ate? Derek Fisher from the Lakers-- who did not want to play for Houston. So he gave up a big chunk of $ in a buyout to join OKC for a couple of seasons before becoming the coach of the NY Knicks-- the team where Jordan Hill comes from.


The circle of life is now complete.

 

The first round picks was a protected Dallas pick that was later included in the Harden deal. The pick that went to the Lakers for Lin was Houston's own 2015 pick, not one from another team.
