That is how I would structure also. You have to believe in yourself. Worst comes to worst, someone will give him an unguaranteed contract next year.

Stinks for the 76ers. I don't know anything about how these contract negotiations went. Why would Philly even offer a one year unguaranteed deal?

This guy has potential. I'm not exactly sure how his game will translate to the NBA. If he works hard, it will pay off big time.

Props to him for taking complete control of his situation.

I would compare him to P.J. Tucker, with more upside.

This is a great idea if it works. It's not so good if he gets cut in training camp, though.

Or gets injured. He thinks he can outsmart the system. We'll see. Odds are he won't.

    Bold move by his agent.

I'm on McDaniels' bandwagon and hope this pays off for him.

This could be cautionary tale or a new trend based on the out come.

Under the CBA, second round draft picks must be extended a "required tender" (at least a one year, non-guaranteed deal) by September 6 or the player will become a FREE AGENT.

Philly likely extended this offer by the September 6 deadline, while continuing to negotiate a four-year, team-friendly deal. When McDaniels refused to sign one of those and a mutually agreeable deal couldn't be worked out, he simply accepted the required tender.

This is not too different from what the Rockets did with Carl Landry back in 2007. With so many guaranteed contracts on the books that summer, the Rockets were apprehensive about giving Landry a multi-year guaranteed deal. So, instead, Landry took the one-year deal, played well, hit restricted free agency the following summer, signed a decent-sized offer sheet with Charlotte, and then the Rockets matched it. This will likely be the outcome with McDaniels next summer.

I like it. He's a freak, especially defensively. He won ACC DPOTY last season, and conference wide, finished 1st in blocks (as a 6'6" wing), 6th in offensive boards, 1st in win shares, and 3rd in PER. Not to mention, his FT% jumped 30% in 2 years (.842 last season; 4th in the ACC).

CP had some nasty put-backs his rookie season, but this kid is the king of the put-back. He'll be a top-10 fixture.

Pay dat man his money, Hinkie.

Parsons deal was considered great by him and his agent because it had a large amount of guaranteed money. Can't have it both ways.

Not really risky at all, the guy is 21 - he can always go overseas and play.

He is betting on his own future - it is a GREAT move on his part - if he develops someone will offer part of their MLE to sign him and it will be more than what he would have made in Philly.

    Smart smart move.
