Strong move by Cuban. Nasty 2-way move.

    1. If Morey matches he has a huge contract on his hands in an overpay, it cripples the Rockets' cap space going forward if we don't land Bosh or another FA in 3 days. And the trade kicker and player option make it MUCH harder to trade Parsons. Even if we get Bosh, that $15M will put us deep into the luxury tax and potentially threaten the Apron ($20M + $20M + $15M + $15M) which means we end up with just the mini-mle, and end up losing our ability to receive players in S&T, severely hampering our roster flexibility going forward.

    2. For Cuban, Parsons was going to cost $10-12M minimum anyway (given the deals we've seen). Even a $2-3M overpay for Cuban is minor as signing Parsons at $12M is going to put them over the salary cap. So really, the Mavs lose very little flexibility (they still have the MLE and are under the apron), they've hijacked a RFA from the Rockets (seriously hurting the roster) and they've gotten a consolation prize in Parsons to seriously improve the Mavs at the small forward position over last year's team and make the most of Dirk's twilight seasons.

As for Morey not exercising the option, we have no idea if Parsons would go for max anyway next off season, however having him as a RFA gives Morey the ability to choose to retain him or not vs having to tie up space and having him walk next season.

I don't think anyone could have anticipated how crazy the bidding on players would be at the beginning of FA. The numbers we're seeing are as high as we've seen them in some time. I have to think that part of this is the anticipation that the salary cap is going to spike sharply over the next 2-3 years, so teams aren't viewing it as nearly as crippling as in previous seasons.

Now, the real problem is whether we can land Bosh at all. While the Heat was asking Bosh to take a pay cut for Lebron to stay, if Lebron DOES walk I can easily see the Heat offering him a max deal (bird rights) and going out and trying to fill out the roster.

Faced with Morey's max deal vs Miami's deal (they'll be able to offer 5 years with Lebron off the roster), which way does Bosh go? Florida has no income tax... his family and friends are already in Miami. And he's said multiple times that he loves Miami.

Granted, the Houston roster is a better fit for Bosh, but how much faith does he put in Riley? Only Bosh knows.

This could get really, really ugly. We could conceivably see Parsons walking (Morey won't want to tie up that cap space if we don't get Bosh or it's still in the air at the 3 day deadline), and a worst case scenario of Miami STILL retaining Bosh.

At that point Morey is faced with a very difficult decision... with potentially Melo, Lebron, Love, and Bosh all off the table, our starting line up offensively weakened with the loss of Parsons and a thin FA class remaining, and needs for a back up center after the Asik trade as well as a serviceable small forward, he may be forced to keep Lin and even move him to the starting line up just to make up for the offensive drop off.

This is going to be one heck of a mess. And depending on how the chips land the Rockets could come out of this stronger, or scrambling to not lose ground.

This team cannot miss out on Bosh AND let Parsons go. At some point you have to stop star chasing and start winning.

If Morey would've just made a decent offer in-season, say $8-10MM, or traded him for Rondo...woulda coulda shoulda. Oh well, cross out the Mavs as contenders for 3 years, that's the upside.

We let Parsons walk, if we do not get a big name in the next 4 days. No way you overpay and hinder yourself for overhyped Parsons, he is good, but not that good.

Every single team in the NBA treats players that way, it's not a big deal.

Silver lining: If we match Chandler, he and Dwight would have an opt out the same off-season, so things could be manipulated to where we could bring in another star 2 years from now.

Maybe we'll match him and trade him during the year.

Relax people, Morey will make a trade for Love if we miss on Bosh and then may still resign Parsons.
