Deal cant be official till July 8th or so i think...New Orleans therefore will only owe one pick to Houston in 2015, since 2014 draft is completed tom...

What's our cap look like now? Do we have enough to bring Lowry in now?

pretty much. It doesnt make sense at all imo, hes worth more then a 10-14th pick. Pelicans are going to make the playoffs, so seeing this pick turn into something profitable is doubtful. Im hoping something else is coming with it. some second rounders would be nice

I will wait and see what happens next and the overall picture before evaluating this trade.

I will say that in the initial stages I would have felt better if this was Lin's contract instead of Asik that was being trading away.

Probably. There's likely less protection as years go on. But I severely doubt it will matter. Pelicans are likely a 8th/9th/10th seed in the west, meaning very little chance of top-3 and no chance to be below 20.

I kind of want it to be 14, just for nostalgia's sake.;)

if the pick rolls over its still worthless, 2 second rounders instead of a late first

That's what I thought. And the only player around $8.3 million is ... Ryan Anderson.

wow - they must be pretty damn sure we're getting a big fish. im optimistic.

on the flip side - if we strike out, then losing asik for basically nothing is a huge blow...

It isn't worthless if we trade it away to shed Lin's contract. Look at the Lowry trade with Toronto and we used that pick to get Harden. Not that we are getting a Harden type player for Lin, but we could use the pick to get rid of Lin's contract and get one of the big FA's without trading anyone.

The warriors barely made the playoffs last year, there's nowhere near a guarantee that the pelicans make it next season. Who is going to fall off for that to happen?

It was always much more likely for Asik to be dealt first because he WANTS OUT. This I feel has been lost given our other pursuits. But regardless of what happens with LeBron/Melo, Asik was clearly going to be traded this summer.

Also, keeping Lin is necessary to keep the Love trade possible for salary matching and to keep our MLE. If we go too far below the cap, our MLE disappears. Overall, it's better to keep one for now, and Lin makes more sense.

The pick its protected. The Rockets are guaranteed 4th-20th pick. anything else and NO keeps it.

The Pelicans do not have a 2014 pick, though--the usual way to get around the rule is to pick a player on draft night and immediately trade them.

Are they planning on acquiring a 2014 pick? That would be the only way to trade their 2015 pick. It still does not add up to me. Why does July 10th matter?
