Wouldn't be surprised if the Astros hired CJ Nitkowki as a pitching coach, then trade him to the Tigers for Ausmus again

 

He played for and was an All-Star for Detroit. Seems kind of weird in that he seemed to want to be on the west coast, but it makes sense as an organization he has history with - and a team that is World Series caliber.

 

One of my fav players. Well deserved. Good luck, Brad.

With Ausmus off to Detroit the Astros just need to plug-in Mitch Meluskey as their next manager.

 

He will be a good manager. He's on par with Matheny, probably with better people skills and more of a killer instinct.

He will be good for Verlander/Scherzer/bullpen. And he won't have to worry about the double switch till the playoffs.

 

Meh... He wasn't a very hard worker as a player (regardless of what the media says), but he was and is very bright. It will be interesting to see how it plays out. He was the front runner for the Cubs the last I heard.

Working for the Astros when Brad was with the Astros.

 

Which stint?

What should have he been working on?

Its not uncommon for guys like him and Matheny to forgo the weight training, and hitting drills to focus on working with the pitching staff, and reading up on matchups/hitters tendencies.

And those latter qualities are what end up making good managers... that and being a clubhouse leader, which Brad seemed to be (whether he wanted to or not).

Brad was well respected, but the fallacy that he busted his ass is not accurate. I was not around his 24/7, but the feeling when I heard coaches or players talk about Brad was that he worked smart, not hard. He was not the only player that did not stick around for extra work (Berkman and others).

I never heard anyone say Brad was a bad teammate, or a problem. He was well respected as far as I could tell. However Brad liked to relax sometimes.

He is very bright, he is a legitimate and I would not be shocked if he does well. He just is not a really grinder type and I am surprised he would agree to manage outside of the West Coast or East Coast. Perhaps he has changed the last 8-9 years.
