Patrick Beverley displays rebounding skills in win over Magic

It’s not often that a team’s leading rebounder is its point guard, but on Wednesday night, that was the case for the Rockets in their 108-104 win over Orlando at the Toyota Center.

Patrick Beverley, who has been sharing time as the starting point guard with Jeremy Lin, had nine rebounds in the win. Six of those were on the offensive glass.

“I have just been lucky,” Beverley said. “(Terrence Jones) and (Dwight Howard) require so much attention so I just go in there and scoop the loose ones out. I try to go in there and make plays.”

His coach is liking what he sees.

Asked if he wants his point guard to rebound the way Beverley does, Kevin McHale said: “Patrick, yes. Most guys, no.”

Beverley, who also scored 13 points and had three assists in the game, said each game he sees the Rockets get better and better at something. He was a bright spot on Wednesday night.

“Patrick has a great nose for the ball,” McHale said. “He just makes a lot of good stuff happen.”

My Sophomore Crush: Patrick Beverley

Patrick Beverley holds the unique distinction of being one of the few sophomores in this class not drafted in 2012. A member of the 2009 draft class, Beverley, every bit the fiery Chicago point guard product he seems, bounced around between NBA training camps and Europe for a while, eventually signing with the Rockets this past January, averaging a stout 11.5 points, 5.9 assists and 5.5 rebounds per 36 in 41 contests with the team. Before his infamous involvement in Russell Westbrook’s knee injury in the first round, he won the starting point guard spot from an ailing Jeremy Lin, a position he’s been given a fair shot at by Kevin McHale entering pre-season play this fall. Regardless of whether or not he makes it, he looks to be the first guard off the bench for the suddenly terrifying Rockets, and while it might seem strange for me to suggest, I think he might be more well-suited to a bench role. Matched up either with star point guards after they’ve been softened up or with potentially mismatched backups, Beverley could be potentially devastating in short bursts. One of the more remarkable rebounding guards in the league, he posted an OREB% of 7.2 in the regular season last year (6.0% in 6 playoff games), which puts him right with the best seasons posted by the aforementioned Westbrook, Kyle Lowry, Eric Bledsoe and even Jason Kidd. It also utterly destroys the best Rajon Rondo, Jrue Holiday, Derrick Rose, Greivis Vasquez and Ricky Rubio, all of whom are taller, more athletic, or more well-known rebounders for their position.

It’s one of the players on that list, Eric Bledsoe, that I feel Beverley most resembles. Both are tiny combo guards who routinely show no hesitation in launching themselves for loose balls, despite the size disparity they’re likely to see there. Oddly, both players are switching their numbers to 2 from 12 this season. Defensively, Beverley’s not quite the same insanely good rebounder, but that’s hardly a problem. Rebounding guards are something of a luxury, albeit a welcome one. Luckily for us, Beverley’s also a burgeoning lockdown defender, and is already something of a ballhawk, as his solid 2.6% steal rate attests to. Perhaps more impressive was his 2.2% block rate as a 6 foot 1 point guard, an essentially unheard of number, rivaled only by, you guessed it, Eric Bledsoe. 41 games is too small a sample size to really make this sort of comparison, but it’s encouraging for PatBev’s future prospects. As they stand, Bledsoe is unquestionably the better athlete and all-around more intriguing prospect, but he’s also still pretty rough around the edges. At only 25 years old, Beverley is hardly a finished product himself, though. Regardless of where he ends up in the Rockets’ depth chart, he’s earned his way into this league and stands to make a fine living as a utility guard for as long as he feels he can play. Considering I’d all but given up on ever seeing him in the NBA after the flashes I saw at LVSL in 2010 that originally pulled me to his game, this is a fine consolation. I’m sure he wants more. He just might be able to get to the stars, no matter how tall they seem from here.

It’s rare that you see a a point guard record 9 rebounds in a game, and even more rare for a player who is just 6’1. But for Patrick Beverley, his unique sense of going and getting rebounds is a lift that the Houston Rockets have never gotten from a point guard in recent history.

There were games last season where Beverley pulled in double-digit rebound numbers coming off the bench, and those numbers have continued to impress in the pre-season. What’s more fascinating is how often he’s able to come up with an offensive rebound, when point guards usually are the ones who get back on defense whenever a shot goes up.

But Kevin McHale is determined to use Beverley to the best of his abilities, which includes letting in attack for offensive rebounds. When asked if he wants his point guards to attack the offensive boards in the regular season, McHale stated that Beverley will be the only one who gets that freedom.

“With Patrick, yes,” McHale stated. “With most guys, no. Patrick has a great nose for the ball. Occasionally, they’ll get a run out on top of that. He’s going to more than make up for that with his offensive rebound and getting his hands on balls and coming up with the rock. The other two and three have to be aware of that and get back. We want to be aware of that.”

As McHale continues to search for the right combination in the starting lineup, Beverley continues to make the case that he can handle to duty of starting games with the first unit at the point guard spot. He has also shown that he’s capable of sharing the floor with Jeremy Lin, which would create great flexibility for the Rockets rotation.

Beverley plays hard. All the time. No matter what.

Have the coaches ever asked him to tone it down, even in the preseason?

“Never. No,” he said following Wednesday night’s 108-104 win. He scored 13 points and gathered nine rebounds in 26:27.

If they did ask him to tone it down, could he?

“No,” he said, shaking his head. “I think I asked Coach (Kevin) McHale ‘do you want me to tone it down a little bit?' when we were in the playoffs and he told me if I tone it down, I’m gonna be back in Russia. I ain’t trying to go back there.”

He plays hard and the NBA season is a long one. The regular season doesn’t end until mid-April and these Rockets plan on playing much longer than that.

Can Beverley hold up playing the way he plays?

“Yeah,” he answered. “Most important is getting your rest and eating right. But for the most part, I eat fairly well. I get a lot of rest. My teammates depend on me to provide a lot of energy, so I’m going to do what it takes on and off the court to be an energy spark guy.”

Beverley, 25, signed with the Rockets late last December. He came to the Rockets from Spartak St. Petersburg in Russia and hasn’t left since. He’s proven to be, at the very least, a competent backup point guard and is challenging Jeremy Lin for the starting position.

“It doesn’t matter (who starts at point guard),” Dwight Howard said. “I don’t want those guys to get caught up in who’s going to start, who’s going to play most of the minutes. I think they both have to understand that they’re big pieces to the puzzle and we’re going to need both of those guys to win. We can’t allow anybody from the outside to take away from their focus and what we’re trying to do as a team.”

Lin was ill for Wednesday’s game, so Beverley got the start and played extended minutes. And he played the the way Rockets fans have become accustomed to seeing him play: hard, aggressive and unrelenting.

The most impressive stat from Beverley’s Wednesday night was his rebounding. He had nine overall and six on offense.

”That’s it?” he asked when told he had six offensive boards. Head coach Kevin McHale said he normally wouldn’t want to see his point guard fighting for offensive rebounds, but Beverley is different.

“Patrick has a great nose for the ball,” McHale said.

Beverley is making a strong case to become the starting point guard for this 2013 Rockets team, which would send Lin to the bench. But Beverley claims that isn’t what he cares about.

“Not important at all,” Beverley said. “We have a phenomenal basketball team. If you look at our three point guards, all of us, me, (Aaron Brooks) or Lin have started somewhere. We’re talented. For me, it’s not about a starting job at all. For me, the overall picture is about winning basketball games.”

Makes perfect sense. Don't know why a group of people vehemently argue otherwise, maybe they have some kind of agenda and try to create drama.

I am beginning to suspect that McHale wants first and foremost to light a fire under Lin's behind, at least it's good, positive thinking.

I do think Beverley is comparable to Eric Bledsoe in some ways, as Hardwood Paroxysm says.

We've got two very good point guards, it seems. Morey, in a recent radio interview, compared the situation (or what he hopes will be the situation) to that of Mark Price and Kevin Johnson in Cleveland in the late 1980's. Point being, you may be looking at a circumstance where you have two very good players.

This isn't an instance where Lin isn't good. It just that Beverley has also been very, very good. Good problem to have for the Rockets.

I'm excited to see how his explosiveness holds up over 82 games, if he can get the respect of the refs, and whether he can contain CP3, Parker, Curry, and Rose (who he battled in HS in Chicago). And find out the next PG to get Holiday'ed!!

Ahh, sorry. Phonetically it would be Pä-te-lee-k Bey-fu-lee. I wrote it in Pinyin but forgot that Pinyin(Chinese phonetic alphabet) is actually based not on English.t

I like Bev off the bench, good energy player. Him getting alot of rebounds...uhh who cares. Rockets pay DH and Omer alot of money to grab rebounds. I'd rather Bev learn to pass the ball and set up his teammates like Lin. Actually i expect the Rockets to run with Lin and Bev together alot this season.
