It seems some of the hatred of fans here against Lin is partly due to the idea that the Rockets chose Lin over Dragic and Lowry. Nothing can be further from the truth, in fact.

The Rockets let go of Lowry because they like lottery pick more. Whether it's for Dwight Howard, to trade up in a draft, or later on getting James Harden.

The Rockets let go of Dragic because Morey refuse to give Dragic the player option. While the Rockets were ironing out the offer sheet with Lin, Dragic contract talks were ongoing. And they had a legit offer for Dragic, one that was totally independent of Lin's offer sheet. There was enough cap room for signing Lin, Dragic, and Asik if it came to that. And the Rockets were willing to sign all three players.

In the end, there's no point in comparing these 3 players. Because it was never about choosing one over another. Even without Lin, neither Dragic nor Lowry would be in a Rockets uniform right now.

Dragic could be arguable, but Lowry is completely out of the question. The events between Lowry and Lin are completely unrelated.

So Morey was planning to have Lin as a backup pg to Dragic? Or just a backup plan if talks fell through with Dragic?

Because 25/3 or even 28/4 is a lot for a backup pg.

Lowry has nothing to do with Lin. If they are upset Lowry isn't here they should look to James Harden & immediately stop crying.

Remember that the Rckets did believe that the Knicks would match up to "a billion dollars." So they didn't have Lin signed when They told Dragic no chance on the player option. Also, the Rockets signed Lin the offer sheet way before they had serious talks with Dagic. So they we prepared for life without Dagic r Lin, and life with both

The Rockets were fine with dual PG sets. In fact, one could say Harden/Lin right now is somewhat of a dual PG situation.

I agree with Lowry, but I don't buy what you said about the Dragic situation.

The Rockets promised Lin he would be a starter. Lin knew Lowry and Dragic were both starting caliber PGs in the NBA and he didn't want to split minutes or compete for the starting spot. Nine days later (without any starting PGs left on the roster) Lin signs the revised offer sheet with the Rockets. If you expect me to believe Morey did not go after Lin and get him to impress the Alexander then you're wrong. Morey would only let Dragic walk if he felt like he could not get Lin. He made sure he got him in the end, but it cost $5 million extra.

Moneyball is how to make the most money out of the ball players on the court. Lin is the moneyball move, because his support outweighs the benefits of having Dragic's production on the floor. Lin was a risk and not the right move in terms of Morey's statistical approach to evaluating players.

Lowry no. We clearly chose a shot at 3 years with Lin over 4 years with Dragic.

Morey said that he still expected the Knicks to keep Lin though even after he changed the contract. Nobody expected the Knicks to let Lin go. The Lakers/Raptors/Mavs all wanted to sigh Lin but didn't put much effort into it because everyone thought he would be a Knick.

People say that we let Dragic go so that we can get Lin. But Dragic wanted the 4th year player option Morey said no. If Dragic had accepted that offer he would be a Rocket & Lin would be elsewhere. Morey offered Lin still not expecting that he would be able to get him away from the NYK.

That's why it's that much more of a disaster. If you were picking Lin over Dragic because you felt he had high upside and that he was a better player then I could live with that. If you let Dragic walk because of a freaking player option in the fourth year when it's evident he was the best point guard available to us then that's just dumb.

Right now Dragic is 16.5 pts, 7.4 assists, 2.8 rebs, 47% from the field, 36% from 3

He's 26 freaking years old and by all accounts a high character guy. You're telling me that's not worth a fourth year? He'd be 30 years old at the end of that deal. It was a big mistake to let Dragic walk.

It's a simple case, Morey gave Dragic an option. He doesn't like it, so he chose another option that guarantees his 4th year. Nothing from the outside has anything to do with it.

interesting for the bolded comment. how would Morey knew that he surely can get Lin at that moment? Dolan told Morey that Knicks will not match the offer before they let Dragic go? Hmm.

Should have just given Gogi the player option.

Dragic for 4 years >>> Lin for 3 years.

Lin and Dragic were unproven over a long period of time. Dragic was more talented, no doubt. Did the player option prevent a Harden deal?
If not, then I do feel that Dragic should have gotten the player option.

Wait. This is funny to me. Why is Dragic NOT getting any blame though. Dragic was getting that contract based on those 28 starts he had in HOU pretty much right? If Lowry wasn't sick & Dragic didn't get the starting nod he would have never been offered that money at all. Why isn't Dragic being blamed for not being willing to sacrifice that player option knowing that Morey doesn't hand those out because it risks cap flexibility. I think it is odd that the consensus on this board is to blame everybody else (Morey, Lin, Les) but Dragic for him demanding that player option. Just a thought.

Why was the player option so detrimental to our cap flexibility?

This is also what befuddles me. A lot of people here thinks Dragic is worth the player option after just 28 starts and that it makes sense for Houston to give him that SUPER RISKY 4th year player option, but thinks Lin is not worth his contract after 25 starts and that it doesn't makes sense for Houston to offer him 25 mil for 3 years. I'm with roxxy on this. I believe if you want to find someone at fault for Dragic's leaving, it's his own fault for wanting a 4th option more than the team.

That is a ludicrous argument and what-if questions like that are totally irrelevant.
