Toronto shortstop Yunel Escobar was suspended three games without pay by the Blue Jays after playing with an anti-gay slur scrawled on his eye-black stickers during a game Saturday.

Escobar apologized Tuesday in front of at least a dozen television cameras in a packed press conference at Yankee Stadium before the Jays’ game against the Yankees was rained out.

Sitting in the middle of a group that included Toronto manager John Farrell and GM Alex Anthopoulos, Escobar said through a translator, “It’s not something I intended to be offensive. It was nothing intentional or directed at anyone in particular. I have nothing against homosexuals. I have friends who are gay.”

The punishment will cost Escobar roughly $92,592, and that money will be donated to You Can Play and the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, groups that fight discrimination in sports. Escobar, who is making $5 million this year, also must undergo sensitivity training and help in educational outreach on tolerance.

Escobar admitted writing “Tu ere maricon” on his eye-black strips, which translates loosely to “You are a f----t.”
No one on the Jays, apparently, noticed. If they did, they evidently didn’t say anything.

“It was just a joke,” Escobar said.

When he was asked what he meant if he didn’t mean a slur, Escobar, who is from Cuba, said, “It’s just something that’s been said around, amongst Latinos. It’s not something that’s meant to be offensive. For us, it didn’t have the significance to the way it’s being interpreted right now. That’s not the significance I put into it. It’s a word used often within teams. It’s a word without a meaning, in the way I used it.”

He later added, “The person who decorates my house is gay, the person who cuts my hair is gay. I have various friends who are gay. Honestly, they haven’t felt as offended by this. There’s just a different understanding in the Latin community with this word.”

Directly translated, it means "You ar gay". Ere is how "Eres" (you are) sounds phonetically by the Cuban accent that omits the "s" at the end. "Maricón" would be the offensive slur which is an augmentative derived from "marica", nickname also as offensive derived from a nypmh, demeaning for a feminine male.

I know he was joking... but... surely you don't write that silly stuff on yourself or equipment.

The best things the Jays have ever done other than winning back to back series is returning to that logo. It's the best in the league, IMO.

Yeah, I bought a whole **** load of their merchandise after the logo change. Too bad after the logo change, everybody alive on that team has entered the DL.
