December 21, 2011 Source of Chuck Hayes' failed heart exam? I am still working for further confirmation, but I have been told by two sources close to the situation that Chuck Hayes was diagnosed with Pericarditis, an inflammation of the sack surrounding the heart that can be life-threatening. The Kings subsequently nullified the veteran forward's four-year, $21 million deal. Hayes, who had been penciled into Paul Westphal's starting lineup, has asked the Kings to refrain from commenting and plans to address the matter himself at a later date. Following the death of former Atlanta Hawks center, Jason Collier, the NBA imposed more extensive cardiac testing during the players' preseason physical exams. The 7-foot Collins died on Oct. 15, 2005 of a sudden heart rhythm disturbance caused by an enlarged heart. He was 28.

After some quick googling, it appears that it is treatable and if not chronic could be caused by an infection or virus.

Is this the same thing that Juwan Howard had when he missed the 2005 playoffs?

More extensive testing, The one thing the league has done RIGHT.

The NBA really does Care, they just have odd ways of showing it.

Wouldn't the Kings just sign him to the same contract if Chuck becomes healthy again? It's not like they can use that money to sign Sammy D anymore....

A really puzzling part of this is why the Kings were so quick to void the contract -- unless they think they know more about the condition and the prognosis for Chuck than meets the eye. I'd like to think that they just panicked and reacted too quickly.
