If there is no NBA season, what happens to the NBA Draft?

It's to be negotiated, but here's how NHL did it after losing a season to lockout:

Well, if it's done like that NHL draft was, I think we'd be in pretty decent shape.

 

Might not be a bad consolation prize for losing the whole season; Rockets get the 14th and 17th pick in a very deep draft.

 

Would someone do the math and figure out the combined records of all the NBA teams over the last 3 seasons?

 

Stern should give the #1 pick to the team with the most times missing the playoffs with a winning record in the last decade because we all know those fans suffer more than the ones of teams like Minnesota or the Clippers who are lovable losers.

This may be in the wrong forum, but.....

If (worst case scenerio) we lose the entire season due to the labor dispute. How will the draft order for 2012 be determined? Will it be once again based on 2010-11 records and lottery results?

Just wondering what you guys think. Anyway, let's hope it doesn't come to that.

 

Yeah, I was thinking about that. Maybe every team gets an equal number of ping pong balls.

Great question. Not sure of the answer myself, but I think an equal opportunity lottery would be a must. Most of the better teams consist of older players who just gained another year on their careers with nothing to show for it. No reason the previous seasons stats should carry the same weight.

 

If the lockout lasts an entire season, what will happen with the 2012 draft? How will the draft order be determined?
If the season is canceled and the sides come to an agreement by next June, the 2012 draft should go on as planned. The draft order will be a little tricky. There will be no season upon which to determine the order, and they can't just repeat the 2011 draft order -- that would "reward" teams twice for the same bad season in 2010-11.

The NHL was faced with this dilemma when it lost its 2004-05 season to a lockout. The league settled on a weighted lottery that included all 30 teams. The weighting was based on playoff appearances over the previous three seasons and first overall picks over the previous four seasons.

The NBA would likely adopt a similar system should the 2011-12 season be canceled. It would be a one-time occurrence -- the league would revert to its usual system the following year.

 

Sure would be nice if in the event that the entire yr is lost that due to previous yrs records lead us to keeping our pk next yr.

Haven't done exact math but it looks like under the NHL method, the Knicks would probably leapfrog half of this year's lotto teams: PHO, UTA, CHA, HOU, CLE, IND, MIL.

So they'd probably get around the 7th pick?

 

Great question, one many of us have been wondering about. CH and Bima gave us some clues to what might happen. Anyone here able to figure out the draft order using the NHL method? I would dearly love to see where the Rocks would fit in such a scenario. If anyone can manage it, I'd be grateful. Math was never my strong suit!

So, if I understand the NHL draft right, what they did was grant each team 3 lottery ping balls and then for every #1 overall draft pick they had for the last 4 years or playoff appearance over the last three years they lost a ball until they only had one left. There were 4 teams that did not have a playoff appearance for the preceding 3 years or a #1 overall pick for the previous 4 picks and so they kept their 3 ping pong balls. But every team had at least one ping pong ball in what was known as the "Sidney Crosby Sweepstakes". Of the 4 teams with 3 ping pong balls, one of those teams, Pittsburgh, won the lottery and Sidney Crosby. But the entire draft order was determined ping pong ball selection down to the last ping ball.

Very interesting.


If the exact same formula was applied to the 2012 draft after missing the 2011-12 season

the teams with 3 ping pong balls would be:

Golden State Warriors
LA Clippers (from Timberwolves pick unrestricted)
New Jersey Nets
Sacramento Kings
Toronto Raptors


The teams with 2 ping pong balls would be:

LA Clippers
Washington Wizards
Phoenix Suns
Houston Rockets
NY Knicks
Milwaukee Bucks


The rest of the teams would only have one ping pong ball.


So, essentially what this would mean is we would have very good odds of having two picks in the top 10 of the 2012 draft since we own the Knicks pick if their lottery ball doesn't get selected in the top 5.

Of course, we could also wind up with the 29th and 30th picks in the 2012 draft and one of those picks would then go to Memphis as part of the Battier trade.


Will the NBA draft lottery replicate the NHL 2005 draft if we lose the entire season? Probably not exactly, but it could follow a somewhat similar approach of weighting teams with the worst records and no overall number one picks.



The above scenario doesn't account for pick swaps and traded picks that have lottery protection built into the picks. I did include the T-wolves pick and those ping pong balls going to the Clippers since it appears the Clips own that pick without any lottery protection.

The point is we still own our own pick with top 14 lottery protection and we still own NY's pick if it falls outside the top 5. It'll be interesting to see what happens either way. And we are in a favorable position regarding the 2012 draft no matter how things spin. Worst case scenario would be if there is a season and we win and the Knicks win, we still have a middle of the round first round draft pick in a very strong draft. Best case scenario would be to have a winning season, and the Knicks have a losing season and the Knicks fall to about 6th in the 2012 draft lottery. Another great case would be if after a missed season and a new CBA is negotiated with some sort of modified draft lottery, we have a very good chance of having two draft picks on the top 14 of the 2012 draft. Could those two picks be moved for an even higher 2012 draft selection? Or what kind of talent could they be traded for? Or what kind of talent will be there if indeed we wind up with two picks in the top 14 in the 2012 draft? (Alas, it is good to dream. Harrison Barnes, Austin Rivers)
