Does this time off help the Rockets more than any team?

The Rockets made perhaps the biggest shift of any team at the trade deadline. Basically traded Capela for Covington, and added players like Jeff Green and Demarre Carroll to the rotation.

They completely shifted their style of play. Went full-time small ball on offense and switch everything on defense.

Eric Gordon has gotten the rest and recovery he's needed and should be fully healthy.

James got much needed rest for the potential home-stretch of the season, which could be significant considering it seems he usually runs out of gas in the playoffs.

Do you think this time off helps the Rockets figure out their new-look team instead of having to do it on the fly during the middle of the season? A major shift like the Rockets made at the deadline is usually something that takes place over the summer so that there is time to figure it all out before the season starts. This time off could have been a perfect opportunity for the Rockets to really figure out how teams will try to attack and defend them, and this break also allows the entire organization to assess everything and really prepare for the home-stretch of the season.

they’ve had no practice or game situations tho

What could they have they figured out during this pandemic? There’s no additional film. There’s been no in-game reps.

actually seeing if this will work via actual games is what would allow them to assess stuff

Focus. IMO when (no, if, really) the season resumes the teams that have the matrix of focus and sharpness after the unprecedented hiatus will be best positioned to WIN. I’d like to believe that includes, is especially, TheGoodGuys but whothehey has a clue?

There is no home-stretch of this season. It's done.

Sometimes it’s good to take a break and reset and refocus. It’s hard to completely change on the fly.

You don’t think it makes any difference that this team has a couple months off to prepare compared to trying to incorporate new pieces and totally change the offense and defense on the fly?

This break gives everyone a chance to evaluate, assess, and figure it all out. Time off matters.

Nope. Every team benefits from the “rest” and no games, practices, or anything of that sort has taken place. There’s no replicating that so there isn’t much actual assessment going on. If any team needs actual games played it’s the rockets. They were very much a work in progress and wildly inconsistent. It pretty much comes down to who used this time off more productively. Obviously the teams who had no playoff chances don’t really care.

    Agreed. Them and the Nets.

Imagine no champion crowned this season, yet the standings are what they are and GSW gets the #1 overall pick.

The only way this helps the Rockets is if Gordon, Westbrook, Harden and PJ come back 100% healthy and in shape. Similar things could be said for a lot of the other contending teams though.

Austin Rivers said it himself. They gonna have same problems when season returns. But they gonna have to fix it on the fly. Clippers found out how to stop us. We can’t learn how to fix it until practices return

this preparation you’re talking about comes with no practice time or additional on-court data

guys will be healthier, but also not in optimal shape which could lead to increased injury risk

What are they assessing and figuring out with no games played or practice time to work on things and see how effective they are on the court?

They’ve had something like 17 games to see how this small ball team looks. The last several games teams defended them differently.

This time off really gives the coaches and players time to think about everything and formulate a plan going forward. It’s hard to do that in the fly playing game after game. With a change this big to the team, you can’t just keep playing the same way as before.

The break has given them some time to reset and really figure things out. Take a hard look at what has been working, what hasn’t, what adjustments need to be made, and you have a clear vision going forward.

I’m telling you, it’s tough to do all of that on the fly during the season while traveling and playing game after game. The trade didn’t just add a piece that can be incorporated into the same system seamlessly. It completely changed the dynamic of the team. That’s difficult to incorporate on the fly.

Clearly the team will need time to practice, but it’s possible that this break helps the Rockets in a unique way, by giving them time to solve the riddle of how to best incorporate this new-look team.

God speed for rockets, nba, and worldwide.

That's an unfair assessment and perhaps it's off-base from rockets basketball as a whole.

The time gives rockets players time to video conference and maintain 'social distance'.

Mike d'antoni is an ace when it comes to planning for an off-season so don't bet against d'antoni!

The time off will help Eric Gordan improve his Shooting and FG%

The time off should also help Westbrook improve his 3 point shots

MDA when given time can make things happen at the highest level. Right now the bottom of the league has figured us out. So yes the time is always good MDA’s coaching style. On the fly in game setting is his weakness.
