should only let the young attend the games... like under 21 only... lower bowl seats $13 and upper bowl $7.... arenas will fill up quick and owners still make a little money... people 21 and older will be getting carded and turned away lol

Sports events with fans are unlikely until 2021. Let's be clear about that.

 

Every league that can get enough regular testing in place to guarantee the safety of its players, coaches, and officials from one another—which certainly includes the NBA—will play for TV revenue long before fans go back to arenas.

 

I don't get how this works though - let's say the NBA has tests on demand, one comes back positive for the Lakers or whatever.

Do the Lakers then go into quarantine for 14-24 days as current guidelines suggest? THe season pauses or what happens then? They forfeit next week's game?

 

How will Tilman survive if no fans til 2021? He's basing his comeback that fans will fill the seats in June 2020

 

The current guidelines were put in place because there simply aren't enough tests available for people to be continually tested in such a scenario. If there hypothetically were enough tests, which there are in these sports scenarios, you might be able to let the others continue to do their jobs as long as they're testing negative. (I'm sure the risk of transmission isn't zero, but definitely reduced... and if you want zero, then it's all irrelevant, anyway, because the only way to get that is a lockdown.)

Jeff Passan wrote about it last week in ESPN's article about MLB's plan:

While the possibility of a player or staff member testing positive for the coronavirus exists, even in a secured setting, officials do not believe that a positive test alone would necessarily be cause to quarantine an entire team or shut down the season, sources said. The plan could include teams carrying significantly expanded rosters to account for the possibility of players testing positive despite the isolation.

Again, I doubt the risk is zero — but if you want that, anything involving organized sports is a non-starter. It comes down to what the acceptable levels of risk are. That's definitely the billion-dollar question. Because if it does shut everything down, there's no point to any of this. Somebody inevitably will test positive.

Yeah, not gonna happen. The world won't last that long if we keep the economy shut down.

Yeah, I think the premises would be: 1) The risk can and will be more than zero. 2) A player testing positive means that player, not the whole team, gets quarantined. You don't play again till you test negative twice. 3) Every player (who's listed by his team as activated to play) gets tested daily or before every game.

Basically, a containment plan, as opposed to a mitigation plan, within the league.

Lots of problems working this out. Basic stuff like, what rules are expected of a player's wife, kids, etc. Also, deep NBA habits such as players going out on the town. To some extent, the testing covers that: If you get near somebody who gives you the virus, you're quarantined. But the league would still need to instruct players not to take their usual social (cough, strip club) risks.

There's plenty of time in the next few months for the league to experiment with a system like this one, in empty gyms with a sample of players or G League players, and see how it goes.
