I expect a run on WR at the end of the 1st round that could push some impactful defensive players down to 40.
Dane Brugler mock Houston Texans 2 (40) DT Ross Blacklock, TCU 3 (90) EDGE Bradlee Anae, Utah 4 (111) WR Gabriel Davis, UCF 5 (171) OG Danny Pinter, Ball State 7 (240) CB Lamar Jackson, Nebraska 7 (248) RB Sewo Olonilua, TCU 7 (250) WR Josh Pearson, Jacksonville State: After zero production his first three years on campus, Pearson was a dominant player the last two seasons with a combined 30 receiving touchdowns. He also backed up his resume with impressive numbers at his pro day with a 4.46 40-yard dash and 41 ½-inch vertical at 6-3 and 205 pounds.
Blacklock is being touted as a guy that can play multiple positions along the DL. He'd be a solid pick but we need someone with more pass rush potential IMO. Dunn and Blackson combining for 1 sack last season is woefully pathetic.
Let's think about what position players most influence the game. I think in order: QB, Pass Rusher, LT, WR, CB, RB, TE, S, Interior OL, LB, Special Teams Stud. If that's true, then a Pass Rusher should be the target, though you could argue that Watt is still that guy and Mercilus should be that guy and Charles Omenihu and Jacob Martin could be that guy. We've got a pretty good team committee for most other positions, not stars but pretty solid with some back-ups. We did show a glaring weakness in pass coverage, but with the talent assembled I don't really know why. Maybe it was pass rush issue. The 40th pick is just 8 down from the top 32 first rounders so you should be able to get no worse than the second rated player at some position other than QB, WR, LT, and Pass Rusher. You might have a shot at the #1 rated guard. It wouldn't be a sexy pick but you could maybe get better play than Fulton for draftee money and cut him to save some. (I am a terrible evaluator of interior line play and don't really understand Fulton's general perceived weakness)
SOTT Seven-Round Mock Draft Version 2.0: Landing help off the edge for the #Texans https://t.co/k1WzDIc2tU via @SOTTexans — State of the Texans (@SOTTexans) April 13, 2020
If Zach Baun isn't there at 40, we should trade down and get some extra picks. Ideally we trade down for an extra 4th and take Terrell Lewis and then Davon Hamilton with the extra pick.
Ya the newest mocks definitely aren’t as exciting without the prospect of grabbing a good prospect at 57. The fifty picks between the 2nd and 3rd round will seem like eternity.
Can’t say I’d be mad at that pick but can you imagine draft day trades that would send Nuk for two RBs, then sending our 3rd rounder for another. Essentially that’s what BoB would’ve done if that’s the pick. The prospect of pairing Watson with a “potentially” elite back would be interesting though.
I think this is what will happen if there is a run on positional players that push some real good players down to where we'll be picking in the second round. Considering who our coach/GM is, I can definitely see BO'B drafting the 8th rated WR that he had graded as the 1st clear cut WR smh.
Indeed very interesting. Speed all over at wideout and a dual threat like Swift at rb would be fun to watch
I hope we don't draft Swift at #40. I'm higher on Edwards-Helaire, Taylor, and Akers. But we can't afford a rb that high anyway. Would love Dillon in rd4 like Pat's mock above has (Coulter in rd7 too). At #40 I would like to see us take BPA at a need position. Either pass rusher, db or wr. Should be a really highly rated player at one of those positions to fall to us.
