I thought you were against the shut down. De Blasio should be your hero. What happened in NYC is consequence of the kind of thinking you are advocating. If we had pervasive testing and were properly prepared, we wouldnt be in this situation, de blasio stupidity or not, cos the virus would have been contained oin the first place. De Blasio only made a bad situation worse. Once there was community spread, it had become a game limiting the damage. We had enough heads up to deal with the problem better but Trump dropped the ball. The economy was wrecked cos you put a self centered person in charge of the interest of the citizens.
Can things just not be as partisan for a few more weeks? No one worth listening to wants this to last one day longer or want it to be worse than it has to be. Social distancing was meant to reduce infectivity because it had shown higher infectivity. If it ended today and 10,000 people have died, it’s still a tragedy. But it’ll be a blessing that the whole US did not get infected in a short timeframe leading to the US health care system being overwhelmed and people who would’ve otherwise lived to die. Was it worth the social distancing and tanking the economy, based on Wuhan, Northern Italy, and New York City’s disproportionate deaths the answer is yes. Should social distancing last forever, no. When should it end? Once we can show that we have reached herd immunity (easier said than done given the wide variety of quality for these antibody assays so far, but a test should be available in the short term), we have an effective therapy (lots of ongoing studies and basically the only focus of research right now), or we have a vaccine (typically at least a year to develop). The whole executive branch could have done more based on historical precedent, but that Judgement ultimately is for a later time. Now, we just have to keep people safe. COVID-19 does not care who you vote for or how much money you make. It just wants to replicate in your respiratory system and go to its next host with no regard if you need to be hospitalized, intubated, or die.
