Why aren't seatbelts on all school buses a federal mandate?

The requirement for seatbelts became federal law in 1968

I mean, can we really not have found any money for this over the last 50 years? I always wondered as a kid why I never had belts on any of my buses... it seems like the very first place seatbelts should have been put.

Texas made it law in 2017 that all newly purchased buses require seatbelts, which is surprisingly progressive compared to other states, but there needs to be a mandate to retrofit all the non-new buses as well.

Did you know that seat belts are not mandatory in vehicles "1 ton" and over ? That includes pickup trucks , big rigs and yes , school buses.

I never thought it made a whole hell of a lot of sense that we haven't made them mandatory equipment on school buses either ....

But can you imagine being that bus driver having to get kids buckled up ? That would be a nightmare trip twice a day. They'd be lucky to get to school by the closing bell.

I was on a bus that got hit by a car.. heard it but didn't feel it and I was standing. That said when the buses get into bigger accidents they need seat belts... I support that idea fully.

Seltbelts are for uncool dorks, plus you want to be thrown clear of the vehicle during a serious wreck.

So this is the school my kids are zoned to, our direct neighbor's kid was in the accident, who luckily only suffered a concussion. Heartbreaking
