It blows my mind that adults take was is given to them based on the family they grow up and the geography from they are born in and sometimes never leave. Wether religion without doing any research into others. Political identity etc etc etc.

So lazy and boring in my opinion.

 

i agree. look how much republicans and conservatives have let trump dictate their world view. he single-handedly got you guys to totally flip on many of your core beliefs and principles.

the party of reagan is now the pro-russia party. your president repeatedly takes the side of a former KGB agent over all of our intel agencies and you guys cheer him on for it.

the party of fiscal responsibility now supports someone who has taken the debt to its highest level ever. he campaigned on eliminating it and yall dont even care that he lied to you.

the party of morals and family values now sucks up to someone who is on this 3rd marriage, brags about cheating on all his wives and paid off p*rn-stars that he had affairs with. i believe it is two corinthians that says such behavior is sinful.

the pro-military party now sucks up to someone who attacks gold star families, lies to troops about pay increases and says POWs are not heroic b/c they were captured.

the party of of free market capitalism and conservative economic policy now supports protectionist trade policies, farm subsidies and tariffs.

 

The 'irony' as @Sweet Lou 4 2 likes to put it, is we are all guilty. Its inherently built into everyone of us. Im most certainly guilty of it. I was born into exactly what you've stated. I like to think I have grown over the years and I would also like to continue to think I continue to evolve my thought process that serves me and my causes better. Ive tried to do a better job at not coming down hard on those who are not self aware and understanding. I have found progress is always made when individuals or groups come together to find ideas in common than find ideas in which are not in common.

Once we look past all the nonsense, we are wired to be tribal. Trumpism is not hard to understand. At the end of the day, they just want to 'own the libs'. I used to be like that.

 

I think you have grown more mellow in your old age. Seriously, I noticed you are not so hard core right as you used to be, but will you vote for Trump this fall?

 

Ironically, the idea that people suffer from things like confirmation bias and cognitive dissonance is so hard-wired into my own worldview, that I readily accept the OP. But, if he posted an article saying some people manage to overcome their hard wiring, I'd fight him, regardless of the evidence.

And of course people want to make this about Trumpers. But, this isn't an affliction of Other People. It's everybody. It's me. if instead of thinking about how you see in Trumpers you admit you do, you might more often catch yourself in the act and maybe mitigate it.

I think the most interesting thing about seeing this phenomenon in Trumpers is not that Trump has managed to overthrow their core beliefs. Because we know from the psychology that that's not how this works. Their core beliefs are not what we thought them to be. We thought they were about free markets, small government, family values, patriotism. Now it looks like when the Trumper is given someone who appeals to their real true beliefs, that other stuff was just window dressing that can be easily shed. Their real core beliefs (for those who have embraced Trumpism) seems to actually be exclusivity -- how all these outsiders of various kinds and infiltrating and weakening the core group and that they need to be walled out so the Real Americans can preserve their own advantage. Free Markets meant keep the poor people out. Patriotism meant keep the foreigners out. Small Government meant keep the socialists out. Family values meant keep the feminists and homosexuals out.

Though that might just be my confirmation bias talking.

 

I think some of yall need help with this Trump obsession. Yall talk about him more than his supporters and spend more mental energy on him than is healthy. This thread and all of the others here are about Trump. It's really sad. There is a reason I take long breaks from CFs. It's a good thing to get outside this place and to not constantly think about hating the orange man.

Not voting for Trump in 2016 was easy. I lived in a red state. When there are no consequences for a decision, its much easier to make a decision.

As I live in FL now, my decision carries a much heavier weight. Its highly unlikely I would vote for Trump, but there could be conditions that would change my mind. If Sanders wins the nomination and she puts a lunatic like AOC as his mate, I would certainly reconsider. I dont see Trump as the liberals version of the anti-christ, but he certainly is not what this country should stand for.

 

Well I disagree. I think there is no better conversation for the civic-minded to have than to reflect on what America should stand for, what rule of law means, how a democracy should work, and therefore all the myriad reasons why Trump is such a terrible leader for us. It will hopefully make us all better citizens for having thought so long and hard about it.
