Westbrook wins games we wouldn't have won in the past

As great as a steady force CP3 was on both ends for most part of his time here, Westbrook just wins us games we wouldn't normally have won with CP3 or whatever other 2nd star / great player besides him. The Clippers game is one of them, but there's more than a handful where Harden could not get into it and we become a bit stagnant, playing slowly, late in the shot clock opportunities that nobody really could turn into points.

Westbrook is one of the few who can do it. With his quickness, ability to get to the rim, hit circus shots and able to not just go full court, but make a split decision to get to the hole which nobody can stop him from doing. CP3 played at the same pace Harden did, was not as quick as he used to and could not give us the different look that Westbrook does.

Just trying to recognise how good Westbrook has been for us and would like to hear y'all thoughts on this :)

WB has the luxury to be load managed and rested in B2Bs and some other games.

In the Playoffs there will be no rests, sure, there wouldn't be back to backs either but he sure has to compartmentalize the stamina aspect.

He is giving the defenses a different look, makes em a bit more unpredictable.

But are you gonna come back and say he is costing the rockets games cp3 wouldn't have, when he makes some bone headed plays?

Would we even be in those situations where we needed to come back from 25 against a sub 500 spurs team if CP3 were here? We would also still have our draft picks and who knows what kind of roster we'd have.

This take isn't so controversial. Westbrook does some things better and some things worse than CP3. There are also games where CP3 would have helped the Rockets win more than Westbrook. Let's just hope the Rockets figure out how to optimize the current team by the playoffs. It's now or never (well, the next couple of years or never in the Harden era due to management/ownership strategy or cheapness depending on your pov).

There have also been plenty of close losses where if he were just slightly better shooter we would’ve won.

In the end our record speaks for itself. We are pretty good but not the elite of the elite

The only thing I'm worried about is his age. How long can he keep doing what he's doing for?

Yup this ! We are stuck with him at this point so as much as his poor shooting/bone headed turnovers and out of control play has driven me nuts at times (as in saying trade him NOW when I knew we couldn’t) I’ve liked several things lately about his more controlled play. As long as he doesn’t shoot too many 3’s, too many contested mid range jumpers, keep driving to the hole, assisting and rebounding and hits his FTs like has been he’s fine and as some have said he adds a dimension of speed and unpredictability the Rockets haven’t had forever, but his BBIQ sometimes and propensity to turn the ball over in ways that are baffling can be very frustrating to watch and they often end up hurting the team’s chance to win. Jury is still out but he has definitely been much better the last 10-12 games hope he keeps that up !

the change of pace is huge. Harden and cp3 indeed played at the same pace. I think the change of pace was huge against clippers who have great one on one defender and we’re probably looking to defend in the half court setting but Russ broke up them dreams.

I would love to see Harden & Westbrook with the supporting cast from that 65 win group.

Isn’t most of it more or less still here ? Ariza, Anderson and Luc are the key players gone. Of course Nene and Green haven’t played the rest were dregs anyway or are you including CP3 ?

I see what you are saying though as having Ariza and Luc was huge defensively

Westbrook was pretty awful the first 20 or so games. He's been really good lately. But we aren't winning more games than we were the first year with Chris Paul and we're not on pace to win much more than we won last year. And if we aren't winning more games than this is kind of a weird argument, isn't it?
