Yordan Alvarez's potential?

There are plenty that have proven to be better over the long haul. Hopefully Alvarez will get there.

 

don't get why people have to try to compare him to the best in baseball..... lets just start off with is he the best rookie and that's all his goal should be this year. Next year when he has had a year under his belt we can start talking about if he is (among) the best young players in the league (under 25)

no need to start comparing him to trout for another 2-3 years. just enjoy the run, this is probably the best rookie year since bagwell, maybe correa's was comparable

Tough call there. Correa played almost a third fewer games than Bagwell but had more home runs and a higher OPS. Probably a toss up. Both impressive.

Alvarez certainly has a shot to pass both of their rookie seasons.

Unless I’m looking at it wrong this guy eats the AL in slugging% currently. How good is that for a rookie?

It's hard to compare era's, especially with the juiced balls, however, he's already playing MVP level baseball and there's no real reason to think that's not sustainable at this point. And that's with everyone playing with the same baseball. He has our attention. He earned it. Yordan will improve as the pitchers adjust, so that's not an issue in my book. I mean how many players go through their entire career not being able to hit a fastball. If that's his weak spot in a season where he'a be on pace for 55 HR, a .330 avg, 200 rbi and a 1.100 OPS, then god help the league because he's only going to get better. The baseballs are likely to self correct, so that sucks for him, but he's still going to be in the top 10 players every year.

 

This is true. But all pretty close regardless.

 

The baseballs “self-correcting” will help him relative to league. He doesn’t exactly live on cheapie hits or HRs. A

Berkman too, but he had some time the year before, so while officially a rookie, it wasnt the same way the other guys did from day 1

 

It's that low and away breaking ball that is his current Achilles heel. He will most likely get better at laying off that pitch as he gets more used to the MLB pitch.

 

great point. the super exciting this with all this is that we are talking about a player who, until spring training, wasnt really being mentioned as the definitive future star of this team and now it seems like he just might be. just imagine if kyle tucker is as good as the astros think he is, we could have a middle of the order of bregman,yordan and tucker for years! I am assuming correa will leave although i wish he would stay

 

Considering he's hitting about as well as Trout on 2019 rate stats (park adjusted), I'm not sure this is worthy of Achilles heel status.
