You watch him, and it's pretty obvious that he looks different at the plate than other young guys. He looks more like Brantley than he looks like Correa or Judge.
Here is another interesting stat about Alvarez. In the 19 games he's played, there has been only 2 games where he didn't get on base or get an RBI. One of those games was the Toronto game where he hurt his knee and only had 1 at bat and struck out.
He should never play the field unless there's a worse fielder in the lineup, who's bat we have to have. Just let him focus 100% on hitting. DH's make the HOF these days too.
clearly, biggio/bagwell/berkman combined is his ceiling and glen davis/carlos beltran/hunter pence combined as his floor
He has to stay healthy and really should be moved to first base to get full use of his offensive ability against both leagues. At this time he does not appear to be fat but in my mind anyway if he does not focus on diet and exercise I could see him becoming fat if he is not careful. He reminds me a lot of Willie McCovey but has the control of his swing similar to Joe Morgan. He will occasionally go fishing for something out of the strike zone but it is amazing how well he sees the strike zone for someone his age.
The effortless power plus plate discipline he’s shown so far makes his ceiling through the roof. My comp is Frank Thomas.
