Dallas Mavericks forward Dwight Powell will decline his player option for the 2019-20 season to enter unrestricted free-agency this summer, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Had Powell elected to exercise his option, he would have earned $10.2 million next season and become a free agent in 2020.

Powell’s decision will conclude the four-year, $37 million contract the 6-foot-11 forward signed with the Mavs in 2016.

The perennial 2 years from being 2 years away player.

    Can't believe he's already 27.

Same. I wonder what his motivation here is? Maybe he thinks the arrival of Kristaps will heavily eat into his minutes and therefore his chance to get another good contract?

I guess that's possible, even though as a bench player i'm not sure where he would find more minutes, in fact Porzingis gets injured a lot so, Mavs should still be a good place for him. Or maybe it's just a money thing, but that sounds too crazy to be true, if Powell is going to get the same or more money this summer, free agency is going to be crazy.

Porzingis extends out to the perimeter as well as being able to do what Powell does in the interior but better?

    https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2019/06/opt-in-extension-on-tap-for-dwight-powell.html

After a May report indicated that Dwight Powell would turn down his player option for 2019/20, the Mavericks‘ big man said this week that he’s not sure “where the information came from.” He stopped short of calling the report false or announcing that he’d opt in, but a source tells Brad Townsend of The Dallas Morning News that Powell does, in fact, plan to pick up his player option by June 29.

Exercising his ’19/20 option would put Powell in line for a salary worth $10,259,375 next season, as Basketball Insiders’ data indicates. According to Townsend, the 27-year-old intends to subsequently sign an extension with Dallas that would keep him under team control beyond next season.

If this guy wants more than 10.2 M, then everyone else will demand at least 15M. No one will agree to sign with the Rockets 5.7 M MLE.

Very underrated player. He's worth the 10 mill, and it would make sense for him to opt out and sign a longer-term deal at the same salary. Like a 4/40, or 3/30.

I think it is a team move. He doesn't sign, gives the Mavs more cap room, then resigns with them later.
