Really mixed feelings about this. Definitely don't agree with the idea of random undergraduate students literally paying for the sins of a centuries old administrative decisions

On the other hand, the question of how an organization/institution accounts for its mistakes and/or criminal behavior comes up again.

I think it is stupid, no one alive today owned a slave, or was a slave, and no one's parent was a slave.

Mark it down in History, learn from it, but we have enough problems dealing with the idiot in charge right now and climate changing - let's learn from history and deal with the now.

Kudos to them for shouldering the responsibility. It'd be a far simpler proposition if Georgetown was a for-profit institution. In a for-profit, the shareholders bear the risk. So, if there are reparations to be paid, it comes out of the shareholders' pockets. But who is the right stakeholder to pay in a non-profit? The only ones that can pay are the students in their tuitions, donors by taking from the endowment, or employees by taking from their wages. The last one would be completely inappropriate, so knock that one out. I think paying from the endowment is probably the most appropriate method because it is the capital fund that people who are interested in the preservation of the institution pay into. The slaves were sold for that preservation, so if Georgetown is decided that it was an inappropriate way to raise funds, the transaction should be reversed from that fund. Students are customers who are not necessarily invested in or even interested in the welfare of the institution -- they pay money for services. They can choose to be donors if they do want to be invested. So, I don't think the students should feel like they should take responsibility for Georgetown's sins. But, I still applaud that the majority would vote to take the responsibility anyway. What I'd like to see happen would be for Georgetown to reject it, but pony up the money itself from the endowment.

Not really sure how I feel about the whole reparation thing, I think that ship has sailed as being a constructive concept.

It is a definite drag on the democrats in the 20/20 election when there are much more pressing issues.I

As a black person reparations are only a band aid on a gunshot IMO.

I don't know that it's true that there are no children of slaves left. In 2008 there was a woman who became semi famous on the internet for being the daughter of slave and voting for Obama. She died at 110 in 2008. Sylvester Magee is allegedly the last living known American slave and he died in 1971. Lessie Brown lived to 114 and just died this year. She was born in 1904. Her grandparents were slaves. Slavery ended in 1865. It is certainly possible that a child who was a slave when slavery ended had a child that is still alive today.

Still, that's not really relevant. If the students of Georgetown voted for this why should we care?

Voting for something doesn't mean the minority of students who voted against it aren't oppressed to pay for the actions of other people. Ridiculous imo. Should be something worth taking to court.

Nothing wrong with a non public entity making the decision to do this. However, they ought to allow current students to be grandfathered in and opt out of the fee.

Going forward, students can choose whether or not to attend Georgetown if the fee offends them.

We should have all organizations grandfather current members in case fees go up for a reason we don't support. :)

To the poster who used the term "oppressed" to describe the students who voted against it but still have to, do you consider me "oppressed" since I am a member of an institution that raised it's fees this year to support an expenditure I don't support?

Yeah this is a good idea. The smart students will know to avoid it like the plague. Get woke... go broke.

This is about paying for the crimes of others friend. That's why I used the O word that you so didn't seem to care for.

I am surprised Dachuda referred to slavery as a crime instead of emphasizing its legality before his beloved Confederacy surrendered. Is it possible that he is becoming more woke despite a steady diet of Fox and Friends?

What is next? Will be for taking down Confederate "heroes" statues?

More woke than you since you are pushing lame conservative stereotypes on people who aren't even right wing. Don't you have a millionaire socialist to fawn over instead of bothering me?

Remember... four houses are only for the party leaders when communism gets installed! You get the gulag. See, I can assume off-base things too.

BTW I have ancestors who fought for the Union. So do I get some kind of pass now? Since they did something, I get to take credit for it since people get punished for bad things their ancestors did too. I should get credit for helping the nation start too, since my ancestors fought the British too. Can I charge ancestors of slaves for the assistance my ancestor lent them as well? Since we are squaring up debts after all?

Since some of you might take that serious, obviously NO.

Lol, I'll pay the $27,200 for tuition, but I'm going to go broke paying another $27.20 for reparations!

The point is that the university will lose respect, prestige, and money over time if it continues to push "woke" policies. Not the weird way you interpreted it.

How will they be able to get the money into the hands of the descendants of the 272 slaves? How would you even prove that someone was a descendant of those slaves?

How do you quantify it and choose the fee amount. Why not 30?

Replacing the current system of k-12 education being mostly funded by local property taxes with a system mostly paid by federal funding where we reshuffle our spending priorities from places like defense to education would help the black community far more than reparations.

I think there are better ways to help black communities than reparations however you are grossly misunderstanding the intent of reparations as they have nothing to do with "punishing" current relatives of former slave owners and soldiers who fought for the Confederacy. It's to solve a problem.
