There's nothing wrong with gaining an extra day.
Negotiations can take a while, even if they aren't at any huge impasses.

While I mostly agree with this sentiment, there is more at play in this situation than simply a willingness to spend money this season.

First off, there is the issue of how the Rockets want/need to allocate their usage of the MLE. If they feel strongly that a quality player or two will shake free on the buyout market and need to allocate a certain portion of the MLE towards such player(s) in order to outbid other teams (such as GSW) who only have the vet minimum to offer, then it is justifiable that they not throw every penny possible in 2018-19 salary towards House.

Second, the Rockets need to be thinking beyond this season when doing the math on House's NBA conversion. If House will not agree to a deal extending beyond this season, then the Rockets can unilaterally convert him to a deal paying him the vet minimum for this season only. While they can still make House a restricted free agent this summer (due to his years of service), they would only have Non-Bird rights to him. If they wanted/needed to spend more than 120% of the vet minimum salary (figure around $2M) to keep House, they would need to dip into their MLE for next season. Meanwhile, they may want to reserve that MLE to keep Austin Rivers, who will be in a similar boat with Non-Bird rights. Also, even as a restricted free agent, House could be plucked away by a team willing to make an offer sheet that is too rich for the Rockets to match (like what Cleveland just did to the Warriors with Pat McCaw).

These risks are very real and extend beyond the mere payment of money this season. The Rockets have a strong interest in making sure House is under team control at least through next season, after which they would have Early Bird rights to him and could re-sign him to a much bigger deal if necessary.

Again, while I doubt we will see the Rockets send House down to the G-League as a means of forcing him to accept an overly team-friendly deal, that possibility does still exist. And doing so would not necessarily mean that anyone is being cheap.

Tilman is really making Morey work.. But Morey is a nerd so I bet he loves this nickle and diming sh-t so he can test his math and knowledge of the cap.

thanks for the point about Rivers

    tl/dr version

First and Second points are mutually conflicting for Morey
    • First means give House more now to potentially solve signing both Rivers / House this summer, but at the expense of outbidding on the Buy-out market this year.

    • Second means we reserve maximum remaining MLE this year for buyout market, but future pain would be getting outbid for Rivers or House this summer.
Potentially, we solve these two conflicts by signing him to 2+yrs, to "punt" resigning him until a year after dealing with Rivers.

However, House's agent surely knows that, so he can (and should, imo) attempt to get paid the earliest possible. And that is either BimaThug's "First" option -- get paid now with MLE -- or "Second" -- sign a 1yr to get paid this Summer on open market...with RFA status rendered rather useless in a McCaw-esque way...since we might not be able to both match and sign Rivers.

I gotta think that option 1 is the way to go .

The buyout market is still unknown and we already know that house and rivers , at the very least , should be this good for us in the future .

Our depth is looking OK , especially once cp and EG come back .

Green , Clark , house , Tucker , Ennis at the forwards .... it's unlikely that we find anyone significantly better at the forwards

Maybe a backup C ... it at this point you might as well just hope nene is healthy . Besides in the post season you know MDA is going to condense the rotation and probably have PJ take backup 5 minutes .

A bird in hand is worth more than some potential player we can pick up in a month .

If we are going to seriously upgrade the roster I think it's going to have to be through trade (knight / Chriss / picks etc )

The buyout market has been pretty weak the last couple of years . Sure it gives us an opportunity to pick up a veteran player ... but any useful player we pick up is gonna be a specialist . For me , all around talent is more important.

What's the best case scenario in terms of the best player we could pick up on the buyout market ? Kyle korver ? I'm not sure he's playable .

If we dump Knight for an expiring, would we re-sign Rivers if he's worth $6m+ per season? Somehow I doubt it.

Keep in mind, @BimaThug was only pointing out two ways House's agent could leverage pain, that has little to do with Tilman trying to save money.

I put best option in my Spoiler; House accepts a 2+yr vet min....which gives us both max MLE for buyouts, and max MLE this summer for Rivers, etc.

But yeah, if House takes that option off the table, then I tend to agree...go for Option 1.

I agree. Not only can the buyout market provide us with nothing worth the wait; we also have more competition this year than we did last year. Players will certainly look at LA just as much if not more than us when picking the next destination. We may be able to offer more money but LA is LA, and if it’s a player worthwhile, Lebron can talk him into coming. Also, if it’s a shooter that becomes available, Philly will be all over that offering playing time.

I agree. Somehow I don't see Morey paying Rivers max MLE this summer, even if worth it. His ego will just kick the can and assume he can find another replacement, yet again. So for that reason, BimaThug's Second point above is kinda in the realm of a minor point, assuming Rivers gets a Luc offer.

I think Morey should operate from the assumption that Rivers right now is out-playing Morey/Tilman's willingness to re-sign him, and act accordingly in the Now, by making sure we can resign House -- that is, give him the remaining MLE, if his agents refuses to help us by not signing multiple years.

I also think that our plan with rivers / house will depend on who/ if we can get a piece with knight .

Rivers and house have been key DEPTH for us right now , but frankly , I could see either of them (maybe even both) being out of the playoff rotation if we pick up a better player .

I think for sure . James , Eric , CP , PJ , Clint are locks .... but then you've probably got 3 spots left . I think green and Ennis being veterans have an inside track ... and rivers will get PT over house . If we play small , house might play because there will be forward minutes available ... but we might wanna play nene .

As much as I get on MDA for not spreading around minutes .... I think him playing 10 guys in the playoffs is a pipe-dream . I'm cool with 9.

So I think even if we don't pick up a talented new piece there is a chance that house especially sees his minutes cut as we near the playoffs and go into it .

But maybe that's thinking too far ahead , a lot can still happen . Right now those guys played a major role in helping James "save" our season . And if we've learned anything over these last couple of years .... it's how important chemistry is . Rivers and house have both drastically exceeded expectations and should be rewarded. I would prioritize them over being patient and trying to play the buyout market

FWIW, I think the Rockets would have gladly paid Luc most/all of the Taxpayer MLE . . . if not for the shoulder injury and the risk of it being re-aggravated.

As for Rivers, if he plays at a similar level to his play thus far for HOU, I don't think the Rockets would balk at paying him most/all of the Taxpayer MLE, either. Luc was an INJURY situation, where the risk wasn't worth the luxury tax pain. Trevor's deal ($15M) would have entailed luxury tax pain far greater than anything in the Taxpayer MLE range.

Frankly, I think the Rockets will (and should) try like hell to:

    (A) Get Danuel House on an NBA deal running at least through 2020 (thereby gaining at least Early Bird rights to him), while still preserving enough of the MLE this season to both (1) make a competitive bid for at least one quality buyout guy and (2) have a tiny sliver left over to sign a nice young G-League player to a multi-year deal during the last day(s) of the regular season; AND

    (B) Keep the MLE (tentatively) reserved to either re-sign Austin Rivers or go after another quality free agent this summer. (Hell, I still think there's a chance that James Ennis could end up out-performing his (vet minimum) contract and that he will opt-out of his deal this summer, meaning that the Rockets would need to at least consider reserving some of their MLE to re-sign Ennis . . . especially if they can't lock up House beyond this season.)

I'm still kinda surprised everyone thinks we can get Rivers with the MLE. I mean, I hope that turns out to be right, it's just a big paycut, more than halving his wage.

Rockets might not. But sometimes "role and style of play" mean a lot to players. Everyone has different motivations. And not ever team values certain players the same. We'll see how the season goes, but right now Rivers is pretty happy with his situation. That goes a long way.
