Alvin Elementary on Lockdown (Update: All Clear, No Injuries)

Hopefully its just a full fledged drill coordinated with law enforcement.

I thought this sounded familiar. In 2016, Alvin did a brief (30-minute) lockdown of 3 schools for unrelated police action in the area.

I applaud the school district and sheriff's dept doing these lockdown on any chance the perp could go for hostages at the school...which I assume is the reasoning for the lockdowns due to police chases (today) and unrelated shootings (2016). But in HISD, I suppose it wouldn't really work as there would be too many situations for an Alvin-type lockdown....or not??

Wonder if they could do these in HISD without alarming the kids. I see no reason not to (quietly) lock the doors if some potential outlaw could turn to the school for hostages. But I'm not so sure I'd agree to sound alarms in the school and make announcement every time an HISD school is near police action with a potentially violent criminal. Are their drawbacks to quiet lock downs, assuming we can pull it off without alarming the kids?

 

At my school, we have hard and soft lockdown. A soft lockdown secures the outer gates and classes continue as usual. The hard lockdown is the SHTF scenario.

 

thx for pointing that out. "Soft" means that the kids aren't really made aware? right?

I guess outer gates don't exist for every school, so a soft lockdown is locking all the outer doors, for many urban schools? I suppose a soft lockdown also scurries all the kids on the schoolgrounds (recess, gym class, etc) back into the school.

 

You are correct that all outdoor activities are stopped and students brought inside. Since a soft lockdown is due to events off campus, we are all alerted to the soft lockdown, but reminded that there is no immediate threat to the students. Students are still notified, but the stress is obviously not ah high. I do work with the older kids though.
