The only candidates that would fit this bill are likely failed ex head coaches who were once coordinators before and don't really have an interest (or there is little hype around them) to become a head coach again.

The next greatest/innovative offensive coordinator out there isn't even a coordinator yet... he's a QB coach or offensive assistant.

It would be very forward thinking and pro-active to try and find the next greatest innovator... hiring a re-run play-caller would be exactly the type of move that most here complain the Texans do just too much of.

The re-tread coordinator route can be done... pretty much exactly what the Cowboys did with Linnehan and Marinelli.

Recent newish head coaches with some success and their previous jobs:

    Doug Pederson- Chiefs OC 2013-15
    Sean McVay- Redskins OC 2014-16
    Frank Reich- Eagles OC 2016-17
Anthony Lynn- Bills OC in 2016
    Dan Quinn- Seahawks DC 2013-14
    Matt Nagy- Chiefs OC 2016-17

Can also go the experienced coaching route (Andy Reid/Kubiak type) or the college route (Pete Carroll).

    • NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports "all signs point" toward Bruce Arians being the next head coach of the Bucs. Rapsheet has been beating this drum for over 24 hours now. He reports the sides have yet to begin talking contract, but it seems things will wrap up in relatively short order. 66-year-old Arians' latest retirement lasted one season.
    • NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Ravens and coach John Harbaugh are working toward a long-term contract extension. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Sunday that "two teams" were expected to pursue Harbaugh, whose Baltimore standing had appeared tenuous for much of the season. As many pointed out, however, his handling of Lamar Jackson in the Ravens' Wild Card loss suggested a coach who was sure he would be back for 2019. Harbaugh has been with the Ravens since replacing Brian Billick in 2008.

The following four HCs made the playoffs but lost in the first round

    Ravens - John Harbaugh
    Texans - Bill O'Brien
    Bears - Matt Nagy
    Seahawks - Pete Carroll

They should be fired any minute. Any takers of the three not named Bill?

Seems like an obvious choice to me. He is familiar with Watson and it would allow the Texans to run the same system so Watsons development wouldn't be interrupted.

That would not be the consensus opinion of this board.

Is that a better O/D combo than the Texans have? I say "yes", and they just got picked up off the street.

Has anyone else heard the "rumor" about Jim Harbaugh?

    Absolutely it is.

Hell, at this point, I'd love to have Kingsbury.

This isn't the year O'Brien gets fired. That will be next year. The schedule is going to kill the Texans next season. O'Brien will be gone by this time next year.
