Because this is the 3rd time Morey has tried to get Melo. Because Morey loves Melo.

We were were trying to sign him using non-bird rights which is 120 percent of last years salary so we wouldn't have to use the MLE.

...and trade Anderson and a first for a valuable, playable rotational player.

He may work out this year at the minimum. But not wanted another year older for more money than that. Which would also preclude the Rockets from having another player with that money.

Carmelo Anthony will be 35 years old at this time next year.

I don't think anyone is going to be knocked down his door to sign him to a large contract.

I am worried that we might not use MLE. Most of the FAs remaining is unable to outplay their contract.

If we do, our owner might not generate the cash this season.

The Rockets could go a lot of different directions.

They could use a good portion of the MLE to sign D'Anthony Melton to a longer contract if the team believes he will be a strong rotational player over the next 4 or so years.

The Rockets could agree to give Carmelo Anthony the MLE so his buyout from the Thunder is quicker.

The Rockets could end up moving Eric Gordon in a deal and use the MLE to get someone like Wayne Ellington because he is a very good shooter and will take a high volume of 3's replace the 3 point shots that Gordon took.

The Rockets could decide to just limit their tax liability and not use the MLE.

I don't buy the idea that a 35 year old Carmelo Anthony is going to be in high demand for a salary above the MLE next year, but who knows.

I suspect the Rockets may not even know exactly what they will do......... because part of it could be contingent on trades.

Didn't know teams could waive the right to set-off. Very cool! Always learning something new from your posts :)

I think with a bounce back season he could get a deal within the range of 10-15M per honestly. That's IF and a huge IF he really bounces back statistically and buys into his role wherever he is. I think he'd take a discount though to stay in Houston if you guys show the promise you showed last season.
