Of course it wasn’t intentional. He didn’t mean to let it slip that he calls Chinese people chinks. It was an accident that he let that come out in that moment.
I'm not so familiar with his history, beyond vague recollection that people considered him arrogant in college. If there is ample evidence that he's a racist, then I could certainly understand why people would doubt the sincerity of his response (that "chink" is not a word he uses in private or would be in his head). Those links you've provided (two from gossip sites and one talking about Redick's unfortunate experience with Sterling) fall very short of being strong evidence to that effect. I was just objecting to the idea that he should apologize even if he was being sincere.
I believe him when he says he wasn't using that word. He has zero incentive to use a racial slur there. It could get him a suspension. Plus he knows what the word means, why would he use it in a greeting to Chinese people? It makes zero sense. C'mon people, he obviously wasn't trying to say it.
Yeah, that was avoidable. It's so easy to not say racist things. Loved the ESPN doc about his post Clippers destination. Kinda don't want him on the Rockets for the minimum next year.
I'm not sure why anyone is surprised by this. White guy from Duke saying racist stuff. You're shocked about this???
Why would someone in his position do that knowing the world will soon see the video? Of course no one should be saying such a slur.
Awesome! I don't know how many times I replayed that video and cried laughing. When do we sign this professional?
Whether or not he meant to say a racial slur, the truth of the matter is that what came out of his mouth certainly sounded like one. While I definitely do blame the video editor for not catching it (and even the cameraman, because I'm assuming that the cameraman for a Chinese company would be Chinese) It wouldn't hurt for Redick to just say "My bad".
If JFK can apologize to Germans when he called them Jelly Donuts unintentionally, JJ can apologize. [edit] and looks like he did. So, Redick even thinks you should apologize. Do you still think there is "no reason to"?
Obviously he use that word often and didnt even know it was a slur. Also chinese fans from China, should stfu. They call nba players gorillas and monkeys all the time even in national television. Quite hypocritical to now go and ask for explanation when they are MUCH more racist.
This makes sense. This wasn't some hidden recording thing like Hollywood Hulk Hogan saying "n*****" over and over in private. It was a public greeting for 1.4 billion people. He wouldn't have said it intentionally and if he were some crazy sinophobe and let the slur slip he would've realized it and asked them to cut it. I blame the NBA and Tencent for putting this sloppy video together. Also, why was a relative scrub like Reddick in there next to global icons like Chris Paul and Clint Capela? China wants to see stars not one-tool specialists.
I agree with you that And1redux's links fall far short of proving Redick's past history of racial slurs. However, after listening to the video a couple of times; it's clear that JJ was speaking English and clearly said (without slurring) "chink fans". He needs to apologize for using that term. If you want to give him the benefit of the doubt and believe that it was a slip of the tongue, then he needs to apologize for that slip of the tongue.
