Beyonce Is Interested in Buying a Stake in the Houston Rockets

    • Rockets could fetch more than $2 billion as valuations surge

Pop superstar Beyonce, a Houston native, is mulling an investment in the National Basketball Association’s Rockets, according to people familiar with the matter.

Rockets owner Les Alexander, a former bond trader, said last month he was selling the team amid a surge in franchise values across sports. The club’s popularity in China may push the sale price past the record $2 billion Steve Ballmer paid for the Los Angeles Clippers three years ago.

Alexander paid $85 million for the Rockets in 1993.

It’s common for celebrities to make small investments in sports teams. Beyonce’s husband, Jay-Z, for instance, was born in Brooklyn and once held a less than 1 percent stake in basketball’s Nets. He sold his share of the team after starting Roc Nation, which represents athletes.

There are plenty of other examples: Pop star Justin Timberlake, a native of Memphis, Tennessee, owns a piece of basketball’s Grizzlies; tennis players Venus and Serena Williams, as well as Jennifer Lopez, are investors in football’s Miami Dolphins; and actor Will Ferrell has a stake in Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles Football Club.

The Rockets declined to comment. Beyonce’s publicist, Yvette Noel-Schure, didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment. The entertainer’s representatives at Sony Music Entertainment declined to comment. A spokeswoman for her husband, Jay-Z, also didn’t immediately respond.

    Surprise Decision
Alexander’s decision to sell the team, which includes All-Stars James Harden and Chris Paul, surprised many around the NBA. It has generated a bevy of global interest among would-be buyers, sports bankers say.

Whoever winds up getting the Rockets might sell what are called limited partnerships, which help the principal investor to recoup some of their investment without giving up control of the franchise.

Beyonce, who has performed wearing a Rockets jersey, would add superstar sizzle to any ownership group, likely helping the team with local and international marketing.

She is one of the most influential celebrities, and on par with soccer star Lionel Messi, according to the Marketing Arm’s Celebrity DBI database. She ranks 150th out of more than 4,000 celebrities, and is particularly effective reaching females between the ages of 13 and 17.

According to Forbes, Beyonce is second to Sean “Diddy” Combs on its 2017 list of highest-paid celebrities at $105 million. Her net worth is $350 million, Forbes said. Jay-Z is worth $810 million.

He doesn't sound like he's sincerely going to miss him.

And he looks pudgy in that video. Probably told cameraman to not film his gut.

Should be working out rather than hanging around promotional event tents.

It's the wrong moment. I'm sure he feels that way. He has other things currently on his mind regarding this weekend. He's also had a lot of time to move on.

Also stop being a Debby downer he has to live a life outside of basketball too. He puts in his work. He's an MVP caliber guy for a reason

Good to hear Leslie is alive & well ... allegedly. ;)

Former #Rockets owner Leslie Alexander follows the team closely & is still a big fan of the team: "Of course I am. The big difference, more than anything else, you don't have that unbelievable life & death experience when they win or lose. You're not as into it as you used to be."

Former #Rockets owner Leslie Alexander said the first few weeks after he sold the franchise were very tough for him: "Yes, you always miss something you really enjoyed in life. You make up for it in other ways."

Former #Rockets owner Leslie Alexander acknowledges he misses owning the franchise: "Of course I do. It's part of a life. You miss good things like that, sure." Said he was very emotional when he officially sold the franchise.

Former #Rockets owner Leslie Alexander on the team having one of the best records in the NBA: "It's great to know that you designed something that's been so successful. You always want to leave on a good note."

Clutchfans is always on suicide watch after a bad game lol. Les don't give a **** anymore now that he isn't paying money for it. Probably sickened him to the pit of his stomach keeping Bobby Brown around.

Leslie Alexander sold the Rockets but kept the trophies

Leslie Alexander may have sold the Rockets, but he kept the championship trophies.

Alexander, who earlier this year sold the Rockets for $2.2 billion to Houston businessman Tilman Fertitta, confirmed this week that he remains in possession at his home in Florida of the two Larry O'Brien Trophies he accepted for the team's back-to-back NBA titles in 1993-94 and 1994-95.

"They're here in a corner at my house," he said during a brief phone conversation. "I haven't decided how to set them up yet."

Alexander had the right to take the trophies with him because the NBA presents its championship trophy to the owner of the team, and it is the owner's prerogative to handle the trophy and display it as he chooses.

He said the answer as to why he wanted to keep the trophies was an obvious one.

"You want to win championships," Alexander said. "That's what you're there for."

The NBA also allows teams to order replica trophies, and a Rockets spokesperson said the team is in the process of doing so.

As with the originals, the replicas will be located in the team's offices at Toyota Center and will be displayed at events for ticket-holders.

The two trophies won by the likes of Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler and others were rarely seen in public, and the most visible symbols of those championship teams are the two banners that still hang in Toyota Center after being moved from Compaq Center, where the Rockets won their championships.

Still, the attention paid this offseason to the Astros' World Series trophy reflects the affection with which fans regard the golden symbols of championship memories.

At some point, the trophies will be back in downtown Houston – just not the originals.

Feritta had no comment on Alexander's decision to take the trophies but said he would be interested in a public display of the replicas.

The Spurs (five championships), Bulls (six) and Pistons (three) said their trophies are on display in their respective arenas. The Heat's three O'Brien Trophies are not on public display but are used for photo opportunities at games, community events and sponsor events.

I have no problem with the replicas but why can't those go to him instead. Some form of this happens all the time with big athletes or stars and they pay for replicas. The city and team deserves to retain its history and individuals can of course have their own copies of it. Houston never should have lost its Oilers identity. F the NFL for that one. They did it for Cleveland. They should have done it for Baltimore back in the 1980s but I guess they never thought they were going back there. If you got that twisted over Cleveland you damn sure knew you were going back to a major city like Houston.

Can we get rid of Les's mural in Toyota Center??

Did any owner in NBA history have his face plastered all over the arena with the trophy like Les??

Very true, it was always very trashy and very Floridian of him to do that. I'm sure the trophy's are elegantly placed on top of the beer fridge of his double wide located just off the highway in the Florida Everglades

The Spurs won a bunch of championships, I have no idea what their owner looks like.
