    He has a good reputation.

He was the Pats ST coach for 10 years and left because Mangini stole him with an "assistant head coach" title when he got the Cleveland job. He then went to the 49ers and then Raiders. Jack Del Rio loved him and gave him all the credit for the teams.

He won a special teams coach of the year award at least twice in, once in the 90s and once in 2009. His 49ers teams were regularly top 2 or 3 in special teams coverage.

On reputation he at least has a really good record.

However, ST is also largely about resources attributed to it. Need better players.

Not as much as the previous ST coordinator. Everyone raved about Izzo and thought he was going to fix all the specal teams problems. Pardon me if I'm in "wait and see" mode about this Texans Fire Assistant.

Ted Johnson (610/Patriots) loves the guy. Played for him and said he knows what he's doing.

    Called it a great hire.

Sounds like a good hire, but it isn't going to matter much if roster depth doesn't improve.

They were bad when they had Braman, Bouye and Charles James. Schemes and coaching does matter. It's not all that matters but it does matter.

Right? How do we really know? Izzo was highly thought of.

    Comes down to talent.

    Gotta GM better.

Just want to reiterate that Izzo had never been a ST coordinator when he got this job, only an assistant. There is a big difference between hiring a ST coordinator with 17 years of professional experience as a ST coordinator that is STELLAR, including at least two ST coach of the year awards and year in and year out good ST rankings and hiring someone else's assistant because he has a great reputation as a leader and motivator. Those levels of 'Highly thought of" are different.

Will he have any input on the late round, UDFA types that make the team for "special teams purposes"?

Texans have had a jillion ST coaches over the years, have they not, yet they've seemed to suck in perpetuity at coverage and returns. I can't explain it outside of talent level.

It might be differenr levels but I will wait to get excited after I see the change on the field; not before.

No actually this is their third. Marciano was fired and replaced with Izzo and now he’s been replaced with his guy.

@Nimo im not excited and agree have to see it on the field. However, you can at least say this is a serious coaching hire now just need to get better talent
